Disputed Parents

According to the Miles Files[1] and to the narrative below, this Thomas Tull was the son of Gyles and Avis Tull. Secondly, the mother purported here died 20 years before Thomas was born. Thus, parents Thomas Tull and Eleanore Browne have been disconnected.

Virginia Land records record that Thomas Tull who patented a tract in 1664 was the son of Thomas Tull of Midgham, Berkshire, England. Thus, it is not yet certain who Thomas' parents were.

A Gyles Tull (no wife named) had children in Midgham, Berkshire between 1607 and 1618, at the least. Since this is also 20 years before Thomas' reported birth, I find it doubtful that this was his father, unless previous opinions are incorrect.

There is a record of a Thomas Tull born to Thomas (no wife named) in 1620 in Midgham.[2] Is this, after all, his father?

Thomas Tull II was a Maryland colonist.

It is said that Thomas Tull and his brother Richard were the sons of Gyles Tull and Avis White of Midgham, Berkshire, England, and that Richard was born about 1640 and Thomas born probably about 1642.[1] According to the Virginia records Thomas Tull, son of Thomas Tull, Senior of Berkshire, England, patented land on June 10, 1664 in what later became Northampton County, Virginia. Two days later Richard Tull patented land there on June 12, 1664.

This was just fifty seven years after the establishment of the first permanent English Colony at Jamestown, Virginia in 1607. (Cavaliers and Pioneers of VA.)

They did not remain in Virginia long for the Maryland records state that they "were in Annemessex Section in 1666", and are listed in Somerset County, Maryland as first settlers in 1661-1666. On November 28, 1689 they signed the address of Inhabitants of Somerset County, pledging loyalty to William and Mary and the Protestant religion.

Thomas Tull married Mary Minshall in Somerset County, Maryland. "The first Banns of Matrimony were published for Thomas Tull of Annamessicke and Mary Minshall of Morunsco" on September 4, 1666 when the first court sat for Somerset County, and they were married on October 1666.[3] They had four children:

  • Thomas 1668,[4] married Sarah
  • Richard, 1670[5]
  • John 1674, married Esther Benton.[6][7]
  • Mary Tull born 1677[8]

John Rhodes sold land to Richard and Thomas Tull in 1671. Land was called "Salisbury" and was in Maryland.

Thomas married Ann about 1688 in Annemessex, Somerset County, Maryland,[9] and Katherine about 1719.[10]

Thomas Tull died before 28 jun 1720, when his will was proved.
