Moses Tullis Sr has French origins.

Moses Tullis was born in 1730, and died before October 21, 1777, in Berkely county, Virginia. While Moses did not serve in the military during the American Revolutionary War, he did sign a petition containing language in support of the new government. [1] Moses Tullis is honored for his Patriotic Service by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, as Ancestor #A116943. According to their records, his wife's name was Mary Elizabeth, but her maiden name is not verified. Application for membership in the Society of the DAR has been made by the descendants of his sons, Arron Tullis, who did serve on the New Jersey State Line and is DAR Ancestor #: A116938; Amos Tullis, who married Elizabeth (?nee); Jonathan Tullis, who married his second wife, Mrs. Nancy (Darke) Welsh, in 1811; Moses Tullis, Jr. who married Leutitia Newell; Michael Tullis, who married Elizabeth Jones; and of his daughters, Mary Tullis, who married David Sewell; and Miriam Tullis, who married William Hall, III. [2]

The earliest concrete evidence of Moses Tullis is from a deed where he is purchasing land in Frederick Co., Virginia, in 1762 from a Lawrence Harrison (Deed Book No. 7, p. 222, Frederick County, Virginia ). Moses appears on Rent Rolls for Frederick County in 1764, and Berkeley County Virginia 1772, 1776, and 1777 (although some of these later entries could have been his son). In 1770, Moses Tullis was named in a deed as one of three trustees, along with John Wright and Peter Burr, for the Elk Branch [NJ] Presbyterian Congregation (which still exists today, in Shenandoah Junction, West Virginia.) In 1775 in Berkeley County a Moses Tullis is listed as a signer of a "Petition of Freeholders of Berkeley County to the Convention, 1775". (Virginia Historial Magazine, Vol 13 (No. 4, April 1906), pp 412-415).

Moses apparently had two wives, by each of whom he had eight children. Miss ____ Van Dyke who was the first wife had Thomas, Catherine, Sarah, Moses, Jonathan, Mary, Aaron, and Michael. She was not the daughter of John VanDyke as shown in DAR and other records. The will of John VanDyke (who married Magareta Barkolo) proves his daughter Mary/Maria was married to someone else when he died. Moses' Miss ____ Van Dyke was probably from the family of VanDykes residing in Salem County, NJ, where Moses is most likely to be from. Miss Mary Elizabeth _____ who was the second wife had David, John, Miriam, Samuel, Joel, Amos, William, and Isaac. All the names of the youngest eight children are found in the court settlement of Moses' estate in 1778. Researchers corresponding on the Tullis/Tullos family in the 1920's all indicate that Moses had two wives. The only contradiction of this fact comes with a DAR application in 1914 which confounds the two women into one wife. This mistake was perpetuated by Zola Scott Hardy who wrote a book on the Tullis family in the 1980s. See bolded note below regarding Elizabeth Timmons, who sold property from the in 1796. It is more likely that Mary Elizabeth (possibly VanDyke, then Tullis) married a Timmons after Moses's death than that there were two wives.

Moses Tullis wrote his will on June 10, 1777, in Berkeley Co., Virginia. The will was proved by two of the witnesses on October 21, 1777, and presented to the court on November 18, 1777 [3]

Researcher Notes

"Tullis's Creek" is shown on a map of portions of Virginia & Maryland drawn as early as 1751 by Joshua Fry & Peter Jefferson, possibly as late as 1755 when additions were made to the map. This area of what was Berkeley County, Virginia, prior to 1801 lies where Jefferson County, West Virginia exists today. Jefferson County was formed from Berkeley County in 1801. Berkeley and Jefferson counties, on the Potomac River east of the mountains, were annexed to West Virginia in 1863. http://www.adkins9.net/media/Map1751.jpg

His widow’s dower took up the homestead part of the real estate which continued to be called Mount Pleasant. After his death his widow Mary Elizabeth Tullis remarried Bryan Timmons, and it appears that she and the minor children went to live at the Timmons place.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Moses by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Moses:

David, I've read through several times and cannot find this error. Please feel free to correct it. Does Error 821 mean that the Headings DO start with a blank? or headings SHOULD start with a blank? thanks from Jane

Thanks, Marc. I've adopted this profile (my ancestor) from another person. I am grateful for any help you can offer with editing. I don't do in-line sources/references, and profile is clogged with so much extra stuff. Do you have Tullis roots? Thanks from Jane
