After the Civil War
Thomas returned home and raised a family with his wife Sarah. He named his first son Larkin Tarrant Turner, a name shared with Thomas's father and Thomas's younger brother who was killed at the Battle of Missionary Ridge during the Siege of Chattanooga in 1863.[4]

Thomas is referred to as "Tom" on the death certificate of his son, Larkin, and by family members who knew him and his children[5].
