Biography

Frederick Preston was born in Lincolnville, Maine, about 1844, the son of Levi and Lucina (Ames) Turner.[1] He was living in Bangor, Maine, with his family in 1850, which included his parents and 9 siblings.[2]

He enlisted to serve in the Civil War as a 19 year old tinplate worker. He mustered in as a Private in Company F of the Massachusetts 19th Infantry on March 31, 1862. He was wounded during the battle at Antietam, Maryland, and was discharged for disability in March of 1863. He reenlisted in December of 1863, when he mustered in to Company B of the Massachusetts 56th Infantry. He was wounded during the battle at Spotsylvania Court House, VA, on May 12, 1864. In October of 1864, he was transferred Veteran Reserve Corps. He was discharged in August of 1865.[3]

After the war, he settled in Boston, Mass.[4] He sought various occupations, including working in a bakery (1870), as a store clerk (1880) and as a shipping clerk. He married widow Abbie Inez (Slight) Moxey. Their marriage record says they were wed in Pelham, New Hampshire, in 1877; however, heir first son was born in Boston in 1869[5]. Perhaps the marriage date is incorrect?[6] They resided in Boston and had 6 children, though at least 3 died young.

Frederick died when he was 49 years old. The cause of death was given as “bullet wound in war”, which caused other physical problems.[7] He is buried at the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Dorchester, Mass.[8]
