Biography

Elias M Turner was born in 1809 in Philipsburg, Centre County Pennsylvania. He was the son of Samuel Henry Turner (1770-1833) and Lavina Simler (1784-1819).

Elias married Catharine C. Cowher in 1832.

In 1840, Elias appears in the Half Moon Township, Centre County census as head of household with six people, including: 3 people under age 20 and 3 people over age 20.[1]

In 1841 and 1844, Elias served as a School Director in Half Moon Township.[2]

In 1850, Elias, age 38, lived in Worth Township, Centre County, with his wife Catherine, age 31, and five children: Sarah, age 17; Frederick, age 14; Samuel, age 12; Elizabeth, age 6; and Nancy age 3. Everyone in the household was born in Pennsylvania. He was a farmer. Three of his childre: Frederick, Samuel, and Elizabeth could not read or write.[3]

Elias served as a constable in Worth Township for the following years: 1853, 1854, and 1856.[4][5]

In 1860, Elias, age 40, lived with his wife Catharine, age 35, and their three children: Nancy, age 22; Amanda, age 18, and Berner, age 14, in Huston Township, Centre County. Also living with them are S. Cowher, age 40, and Nancy Cowher, age 38. Elias works as a laborer. He has personal worth of $300. Berner cannot read or write.[6]

In January 1861, Elias Turner is listed in the Centre Democrat as owing $101.59 in outstanding taxes.[7]

In Winter, 1862, Elias and Catharine Turned joined the newly formed and built Presbyterian Church at Martha Furnace in Worth Township. Elias eventually became an elder in the church.[8]

In 1870, Elias, age 61, lived with his wife, Cathariner, age 55, in Worth Township (Post Office: Port Matilda), Centre County. Two children, Amanda, age 18, and Bennie, age 16 lived with them. Elias is still a farmer; Bennie works on the farm, which is valued at $1500, and he has $575 worth of personal property. Catherine cannot read or write; Amanda and Bennie attended school.[9]

In 1880, Elias, age 71, lived with his wife Catharine, age 66, and his son, Benner, age 24, his wife, Alvina, and their two twin chilldren: Elmer Alfred and Mary Catharine, age 10 months. Elias still owns a farm, and his son workds on the farm.[10]
