Biography

Timothy Tuttle was born in New Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut Colony, in about 1682.[1] He was the son of Simon Tuttle and Abigail (Unknown) Tuttle.[2]

In about 1686, when Timothy was about three years old, his family resettled in Wallingford. Later, as an adult, he cleared land to the west of the original settlement where he established a farm. This western area attracted other settlers and, by the 1720s, became a separate parish with Timothy Tuttle as one of the leaders of the New Cheshire Parish church, becoming a deacon of that church on 19 Aug 1739. He was also a sergeant, probably in the Wallingford militia.[3][4]

On 2 Nov 1706, Timothy was married to Thankful Doolittle by Justice Hall in Wallingford.[5] They had ten children:

Thankful (Doolittle) Tuttle died on 23 Nov 1728, in Wallingford.[16]

Timothy's second wife was Mary (Peck) Rowe (or Row), a widow. He was married to her on 9 Jun 1729, by Samuel Bishop, Justice of the Peace, in New Haven.[17][18] Timothy and Mary had two children:

Mary (Peck) Rowe Tuttle died on 22 Jan 1747/8, in Wallingford.[21]

On 28 Jun 1749, Deacon Timothy Tuttle married another widow, Sarah (Atwater) Humiston, in Wallingford.[22] No children were born of this marriage.

Deacon Timothy Tuttle died in Wallingford on 15 Apr 1756,[23] and was buried there in the Hillside Cemetery.[24] In his Will, dated in December of 1753, he directed his "wife Sarah to have all the estate she brought me at time of my marriage." He also mentioned four surviving sons, in addition to Ephraim, his executor (Moses, Gershom, Timothy, and Simon), and three surviving daughters (Mary, wife of Miles Hull; Abigail, wife of John Gaylord; and Mehitable, wife of Andrew Clark), as well as the children of his deceased daughter Rachel, who had been the wife of Nathan Tyler.[25]

Sarah (Atwater) Humiston Tuttle, Timothy's widow, died 28 May 1761, also in Wallingford.[26]

Research Notes

Note on Location Names: In 1780, some 24 years after Deacon Timothy Tuttle's death, New Cheshire Parish formally separated from Wallingford and was incorporated as the town of Cheshire. In 1829, Columbia Parish in Cheshire, where a number of his descendants still lived, was incorporated as the town of Prospect.[27]

Birth Date: Deacon Timothy Tuttle, Sr.

No record has thus far been located to document Timothy Tuttle's birth date. Two sources for his death (his Will and his gravestone) provide calculated estimates. In his Will, dated in December of 1753, he stated he was "in the 71st year of my age," which would mean that he turned 70 years old between December of 1752 and December of 1753,[28] born between December of 1682 and December of 1683. The engraving on his gravestone stated: "Here lies the body of Deacn Timothy Tuttle he died April the 15th 1756 in the 75th year of his Age."[29] If accurate, this would mean he turned 74 between 15 Apr 1755 and 15 Apr 1756, born between 15 Apr 1681 and 15 Apr 1682. Since there is no overlap between these two estimates of his age, and since 1682 has been the choice of other published genealogies,[30] that is the estimated year retained here in the data field. Marriage Date: Thankful Doolittle Tuttle

The marriage date (2 Nov 1706) for Timothy and Thankful may be in error, given that their eldest daughter, Rachel, was born six months earlier, in April of 1706. Although this is certainly possible, it is far more likely that Thankful was pregnant when the marriage took place. There may be an error in the transcription of the marriage date, mistaking a "5" for a "6," or possibly a clerical error in the original entry. The citation of the original source is Volume 2, Page 0 (Land Records); this needs to be checked.

The Extra Wife: Mary Humiston

At some point after his death in 1756, the list of Timothy's wives was expanded to include a Mary Humiston as his third wife, making Sarah Atwater Humiston his fourth wife. This extra wife had a marriage date of 17 May 1739, and a death date of 22 Jan 1748, which is actually the date of death for Mary Peck Rowe Tuttle, who appears (properly) as Timothy's second wife, but who is also given a death date of 22 Jan 1738: precisely ten years too early. The vital records of Wallingford, at least in their transcription, provide no evidence of a Mary Tuttle's death in 1738; nor do they provide any evidence of a marriage for Timothy in 1739.[31]

Where this error originated remains a mystery, but it was picked up and carried forward in 1883 by George Frederick Tuttle in his two-volume The Descendants of William and Elizabeth Tuttle.[32] Two other genealogists, Donald Lines Jacobus[33] and Charles Henry Stanley Davis,[34] have only the three wives documented here.

There is a Mary Humerstone in New Haven who was married to a Timothy Tuttle by the Rev. Isaac Stiles on 17 May 1739.[35] Also recorded in New Haven is the birth of a Timothy, son of Timothy Tuttle, on 14 Dec 1746.[36] This Timothy Tuttle, husband of Mary Humerstone, may be Deacon Timothy's son, Timothy, Jr., who was born in 1716, and who would therefore have been about 22 years old in May of 1739. (A second marriage for a Timothy Tuttle in New Haven, on 12 Jan 1748/9, to Ann Washbon of Derby, refers to Capt. Timothy Tuttle.)[37]

Please Note: This Timothy Tuttle was known as "Sr." during his life time, not as Timothy Tuttle, I. Changing that to "I" would only be for our convenience.

Hello fellow Wiki-tree'rs,

Can this Timothy Tuttle be listed as the 1st instead of Sr? He has a son, grandson and great grandson named Timothy. It had me a little bit confused for a short time.

Thanks, Chris

Timothy Tuttle's 4 wives are actually 3 wives. Thankful [Doolittle-51] is fine. But Mary (Rowe) Tuttle [Rowe-1935] should be Mary (Peck) Tuttle aka Rowe (she was Widow Rowe when she married Timothy), Mary (Humiston) Tuttle [Humiston-27] is fictitious, and Sarah (Atwater) Tuttle [Atwater-17] should be Sarah (Atwater) Tuttle aka Humiston (as she was Widow Humiston when she married Timothy). I would appreciate some feedback before I begin such a major rearrangement. Thank you.
