Biography

The George F. Tuttle genealogy gives his occupation as stone mason. In 1703 he bought land near Wallingford bridge. In 1706 he bought land in Wallingford of Simon Tuttle. In 1722 he agreed with John Humiston to divide the lot formerly belonging to the wid. Anne Howe. In 1729 he conv. to Caleb Todd lands on east side of N. H. East River. Also right in land laid out to "my honored grandfather, Mr. William Tuttle." Sam. Tuttle and wife Sarah joined the church in N. H. in 1692. April 3, 1704, Samuel Tuttle Sen'r is on a list of townsmen that acquired land for the Half Division with 9 persons rate in 1683 is 18 and in 1702 is 54 and 25 and 1/4 acres in "The Sequestred Land" and 12 and 2/4 and 1/8 acres in "The Half Devision." On this list the number of persons living in Samuel Tuttle's place of residence is nine. If Samuel's first wife had died around 1702 and if he did marry Abigail (Frost) Barnes shortly after 1712 then the number of children, including Stephen born 1688, would have been eight and with Samuel that would bring his total household to nine persons which is the number given on the above list from 1704. April 28, 1696, Samuel Tuttle, Senior request the town compensate him for land for damage done to him by the high ways at the west end of his land. Feb. 16, 1697; Sargeant John Cooper and Sargeant Thomas Talmadg '"Judg that the towne may grant him so much of the towns Land at the east end of his Lott." Sept., 18, 1705; Mar. 12, 1711; Nov. 9, 1713; Dec. 28, 1719; Sept. 20, 1720; Sept. 18, 1722; Sept. 17, 1723; Samuel Tuttle, Senior is on lists of townspeople who received lots drawn in the "undivided land in New Haven." March 20, 1699; Samuel Tuttle was refused the "Liberty to Retaill Drink." March 1702/03; Samuel Tuttle, Senior was listed as one of the freeman of the town of New Haven. Dec. 28, 1690; Samuell Tuttle and Mr. Moses Mansfield listed as Haward for Pine Rock field. New Haven Deeds; vol. 9, pgs 330 - 332. P. 330 Samuel Tuttle conv. land to son Josiah Tuttle; Aug. 5, 1730. Pgs 331 and 332, Samuel Tuttle conv. land to son Daniel Tuttle for the consideration of love, goodwill and affection; June 4, 1733. P. 332 Samuel Tuttle conv. land to son Stephen Tuttle for the consideration of love, goodwill and affection. In the above contracts, Stephen Tuttle was to pay the daughters of Samuel Tuttle ten pounds each. Nov. 2, 1717, "John Frost of Newark in the county of Essex and province of New Jersey - Yeoman together with his Brother Samuel Tuttle Husbandman and Abigail his wife of New Haven and county of the same and Colony of Connecticut in New England send greeting." Quit claimed to their brother, Ebenezer Frost, his portion of the estate of "our honored Father and Mother John and Mary Frost late of New Haven." Pgs 775 - 776; Nov. 2, 1717, "Abigail Tuttle, wife of Samuel Tuttle, quit claimed to Ebenezer Frost of said town and county of New Haven of all her right title and interest in and unto the real as well as personal estate of our Honored Father John Frost late of New Haven Deceased by a deed bearing date with these presents make over and for ever confirm unto the said Abigail Tuttle and her sons which she had by her former husband Thomas Barnes of the above said town and County of New Haven."

Samuel Tuttle, son of John and Catherine (Lane) Tuttle, was born on 9 Jan. 1660 at New Haven.[1]

He married Sarah Newman, daughter of Richard, about 1684. Sarah died in 1708.[1]

He married Abigail (Frost) Barnes, widow of Thomas Barnes and daughter of John and Mercy (Payne) Frost,[2] [1]

Samuel died on 8 July 1773 at New Haven and was buried at Old Cemetery, North Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut. His memorial has a photo of his headstone, biographical material and links to those of family members.[1]

SAMUEL TUTLE AND SARAH NEWMAN

George Tuttle Book, p. 24: Samuel Tuttle [8th great-grandfather] is number 13. He married Sarah Newman, daughter of Mr. Newman, likely the Newman at whose barn the church covenant was drawn) in June 1684. He and Sarah Newman joined the church in 1692. He was a stone mason. In 1729, he conveyed land to Caleb Todd. Samuel married Abigail, daughter of John and Mercy Frost of Newark, New Jersey, and widow of Thomas Barnes. Abigail was the mother of 15? children. Samuel died between 1731-173?. Their 6th child was Josiah, born 5 Apr 1696, baptized Dec. 1679.

Families of Ancient New Haven, p.1881, Samuel was born 9 Jan 1659/60 and was baptized 23 Mar 1666 in New Haven. He died 8 Jul 1733. He married Sarah, daughter of Richard Newman, in June 1684. He then married Abigail as stated above. She was born 8 Oct 1670 and died circa 1748.
