Biography

William Tyrrell (aka Tyrell, Terrill, Terrell) was born in 1552 at Thornton Hall, Buckinghamshire, England. He was the 2nd son of Sir George Tyrrell, b: ca. 1530 - d: 1571, and his 1st wife: Eleanor (Montague) Tyrrell, b: ca. 1530 - d: 1560. She was the daughter of Sir Edward Montagu, Chief Justice of England under King Henry VIII. She passed away in 1560 when William was still a child. This was an old Anglo-Saxon aristocratic family whose historic seat was in County Essex but which had expanded into Buckinghamshire early in the 16th Century.[1]

In keeping with the laws of primogeniture, William Tyrell's older brother, Sir Edward Tyrrell, b: 1551, inherited most of their father's estates and titles on his death in May 1571. William became Lord of the Manor of Bruyn in Berkshire, and also possessed land in Reading, Berkshire, from his mother's 1560 inheritance. In the 1570s, he alienated the Manor of Bruyn and settled in the city of Reading, England. Some years later, around 1587, he married Margaret Richmond (aka Webb), b: ca. 1560 in Stewly, Buckinghamshire. The couple lived at St. Giles, Reading, Berkshire, England, and had 3 sons:[2]

  1. David Tyrrell, b: 1588 - d: 1632 in England
  2. Francis Tyrrell, b: 1592 - d: 1638 in Berkshire, England
  3. Robert Tyrrell, b: 1594 - d: 12 Jun 1643 in Reading, Berkshire, England. He became the "Councilor, Guardian of Reading".

Both William and Margaret (Richmond) Tyrrell / Tyrell died in August 1595, possibly of plague ?, leaving their 3 young sons to be raised by relatives.[3] Their youngest son is said to have had a son named Richmond Tyrrell (later changed to "Terrill"), who emigrated to the English colony of Virginia, thereby founding the large and prominent colonial Virginia Terrell / Terrill family.[3]

Hello there seems to be a discrepancy in this record. The family links indicate two sons (Roger and Robert) yet the Biography sites three (David, Francis and Robert). I believe the biography text is incorrect, and the Roger and Robert are correct, via Heritage sites. Robert is my ancestor. However, I've seen messages of David and Francis in other people's trees (perhaps all cited incorrectly) .This reference indicates #2 as the source for this information, which is a book written about Virginian planters and their heritage, but I'm not purchasing that book to view it's authenticity. Just flagging in case anyone is using the cited text. instead of the links to the lineage.
