William was born in 1846 in Lamerton, Devon, England and was baptised in the parish church on September 13, 1849. He is the son of Emanuel Uglow and Jane Bate and at the time his father was a labourer.[1][2]

On the parish register of baptisms in Lamerton for the year 1849, there is a small note outside left margin where baptism date of September 13th was -- it says __ years but I cannot read it with certainty. (MacKechnie-21 23:01, 25 March 2022 (UTC))
