William was a Friend (Quaker)

From Warrington MM Quaker records, 9 Sep 1785: "Our Ancient Friend William Underwood being deceas'd who having heretofore Recorded Marriage Certificates for this meeting it is desired that Friends have it under consideration and propose a Person to next Meeting to Succeed him in that service."

From Warrington MM Quaker records, 13 Feb 1796: "A Testimony from Warrington Monthly Meeting in York County; concerning our friend William Underwood. Notwithstanding the length of time that has elapsed since the decease of this our valuable friend, yet being impressed with a remembrance of the integrity, uprightness and simplicity of his life, we believe it right to give this short testimony concerning him. He was born in London Grove Township Chester County the 23 day of the 11th mo. 1720. And his parents, Alexander & Jane Underwood, gave him a pious Education. In the early settling of friends, he removed into Warrington Township York County. In the year 1766, he was appointed to the station of an Elder, in which he continued upwards of 19 years untill the time of his decease, which was on the 18th of the 5th month 1785, and attended by a large number of friends and neighbours, was decently interred in friends burying ground, at Warrington aged upwards of 64 years. He was a man of sound judgment, examplary in his life and conversation, Zealously concerned that good order and Discipline should be maintained in the church, being well qualified to promote the service.
