Biography

Daniel Underwood was born on December 1st, 1802 in DeRuyter, New York to Joseph Underwood and Elizabeth Coggeshall.[1]
Daniel was a tanner by trade and resided for many years in the town of Williamson, New York. In 1857 he removed to Grundy County, Illinois, where he purchased and improved a farm in Wauponsee township. He was an original member of the Abolition party and one of the founders of the Republican party in the county.[2]
In old age he and Chloe moved to Lake City, Minnesota and lived with their youngest son until his death on January 3rd, 1881.[2]

Research Notes

  • Father of Joseph M. Underwood - The Farmington Yearly Meeting recorded the birth of Joseph M. Underwood in 1844, stating his parents' names as Daniel and Phebe (not Chloe). Note that Daniel and Chloe's son, Joseph C., was born in 1839 and died in 1841. Confusing matters further, a 14-year-old Joseph was enumerated in the Underwood's 1850 household. Given that there was no other (known) Daniel Underwood in this area during this period, I assume Phebe was either Chloe's middle name (or an error), and Joseph M. was indeed the child of Daniel and Chloe.[3] The biography of Daniel's son-in-law, John Franklin Burleigh, lists a son named Merritt, which likely represents Joseph's middle name.[2]
  • 1840 Census - There are 8 individuals enumerated in Daniel's 1840 household in Williamson, NY, but only 6 of these identities can be inferred from their respective age-ranges. In particular, there is a 15- to 20-year-old male and a female under the age of 5 who do not match birth records from the Farmington Yearly Meeting records. The teenage male could be a farmhand or some relation to Daniel or Chloe. The young girl could be an unidentified daughter.[4]
