Biography

The only document identifying Susannah is the 1807 marriage for her daughter Margaret. In 1979 the consent for the marriage was included with the marriage bond in the records of the Bourbon County, Kentucky Clerk. The consent stated Elijah and Susannah Barbee were Margaret's parents. This information was published in Kentucky Ancestors magazine in 1979.[1]

Susannah's birth date is a guess and based on the approximate birth date of her husband, Elijah Barbee as well as the birth dates for her known children.

We know the Barbee's resided in Montgomery County, Kentucky in 1808 because Elijah Barbee's name is on the tax list and living nearby was his son-in-law Philip Cox. [2] Elijah's name is not on the Montgomery Co., Kentucky tax lists after 1808. He is not in the 1810 census.

We believe Susannah died after 1807 and before 1812 when Elijah Barbee married his second wife. His second marriage took place in Virginia in 1812. Elijah was reportedly on the Stafford Co VA tax list in 1812 with no land and 1 horse. [3]

In 1814 Elijah's name is on the tax lists in Bourbon County, Kentucky. During all his travels between Kentucky and Virginia it is unclear where Susannah died and when.

Research

Comment on research regarding her husband.

Not her husband but listed online in various trees and previously connected as her husband is John Barbee Jr. This was speculative and from what is known of John Barbee does not match the description in Susanna's profile.

The proper husband of Susannah based on tax lists appears to be Elijah Barbee who resided in Caroline Co VA 1789-1803. In the Caroline County VA Personal Property Tax 1789 Elijah Barby is listed as a white male over 16 years of age living in the household of Farish Coleman. Some records show Farish Coleman married his second wife, Catherine Rogers about 1790. With that in mind it is possible to surmise Elijah or his wife was related to either the Coleman or Rogers families and that is why he was residing with them. It is known Catherine Rogers Coleman was later involved in a lawsuit with her brother over land in Bourbon County, Kentucky where Elijah eventually settled.[4]

There is another incorrect connection for Susannah's birth and parentage. Thus far there is NO PROOF for Online sources [5]showing Susannah Thayer, daughter of Thomas Thayer and Lydia Wales, was born 1752 Braintree, Massachusettes and died bef 1812 Virginia was the wife of Elijah Barbee.[6] [7][8]

Research of Janet Cobb in April 2023 mentions a group of Barbeys in 1813 Stafford Co VA tax lists included Susannah, Eli, Lameth, Sabachthani. In 1814, only Lamoth, Eli, and Susannah were on the list. In 1815, Susannah and Lameth. And 1816-18, only Susannah. I then went back to 1809 and found no other Barbees except Sampson, who has different parents than Lameth, if FamilySearch's pedigrees are right.

Susannah of Stafford Co. is on the personal prop tax lists through 1819, in the 1st District, with tax collector Nath P. Williams. This Susannah lived for at least 6-7 years after Elijah married Ann/Nancy.

Note, the tax lists are alphabetized and the four 1813 Barbeys are listed on the same date with several other B surnames. The same is true of the other years, so I wouldn't necessarily say they were a family, except for one thing: the words, "Eli lama sabachthani" are ancient Hebrew that translate to, "My God, why hast thou forsaken me?" Can that be a coincidence -- ?

Interesting that the names Susannah and Eli are the same as ours, but since Elijah was married to Ann Solomon by then, they must be different people. I remember that you found a Susanna Barba on an 1810 census in/near Falmouth, and think she may have been this Susannah, since there wasn't another on the personal property lists. Lamoth Barbey (b. 1785 in Stafford VA to John T. Barbee Jr./Martha Strother, if FS ped is right) was on the 1810 pers prop tax list with one white tithable. Maybe Susannah was his first wife that he married after the tax list was made. Maybe Eli of the militia was their son.

NOTE from Connie Graves: Here is the reference for Susannah in the 1810 census for Falmouth, Stafford Co VA p 275/134 which has a SUSAN Barba. Clearly written Barba with no "r" or "e" at the end. The household includes: Males, 10-15= 1; 16-25= 2//females, under 10= 2; 10-15= 1; 16-25= 1; 26-44= 1; 45+= 1. Either one of the females could be Susannah, Elijah's first wife. The population of the town of Falmouth in 1810 was 460 persons. The 1810 census is not alphabetic, so should contain a good representation of who lived around her.[9]

Also consider in Stafford Co VA 1810 there were 5 Barber households with Edward, Harry and Joseph in Falmouth, Stafford Co. There was also an Edward and William in Aqua, Stafford Co. The town of Falmouth was a trading center for the Northern Neck of Virginia.

Susan was also on the 1820 Stafford census. Her surname can be read as either Barba or Barbee. Comparing neighboring names to those on the tax lists shows that the census Susan is among the same people as the tax list Susannah. The 1820 census entry for Susan Barba reads, two white females of 45 and upwards. Between 1810 & 1820, Susan Barba's household shrank down to just her and another older woman.

Judy,

Lameth is the brother of Eli Barbee (who married Mary Drummond in 1812 in Fauquier Co VA) and John Sabacthani Barbee who married Margaret Thurman in Spencer Co, KY. These three brothers are sons of Susan/Susanna Barbee (maiden name unknown) of Stafford Co VA.Susan is listed in the 1810 in Stafford Co census with her three sons and several unknown (to me) daughters. She is still in Stafford in 1820. In 1830, she is in Jefferson Co KY between 80-90 years old. There is a tax record in 1813 in Stafford Co that lists Susan, Eli, Lama, Sabacthani all together on list B.You can find records of John Sabacthani Barbee's land in Vigo Co IN on Ancestry and his war of 1812 pension records on Fold3.

Susan was the widow of John (b. 1754) or William (b. 1751) of Stafford Co VA, sons of Thomas Barbee Jr. and Margaret Fant. This Thomas was b. abt. 1720 and is the brother of Andrew and Joseph of Fauquier and John of Culpeper VA/Mercer KY.

This Barbee family is very hard to trace, but the John and William just mentioned have brothers Thomas (b. 1752, who is likely the one who married Martha Barnham and went to AL) and Joseph Barbee (b. 1758, and married Leannah ___? and went to Scott Co KY). I have suggested to others that Elijah (of Caroline Co VA and Bourbon Co KY) and Benjamin (who went to OH from Stafford and Fauquier/Culpeper) are younger brothers not listed on the Overwharton Stafford baptism records that ended by about 1759-60.

I suspect that Lameth's father was John Barbee, b. 12 Nov 1754 at Overwharton, as William (b. 1751) had a wife named Sarah in the 1780's and disappeared from Stafford tax records while John is listed through 1803.

Thomas Jr (who is listed in Thomas Sr. in some Stafford Tax records - as the father Thomas died in 1752) is levy free in the 1790's as he is elderly, and disappears from the tax rolls 1793. His son Thomas is listed in Stafford as "Jr" in 1793-1796 then is just listed as Thomas Barby in 1797 and thereafter. This suggests that Thomas Barbee b. 1720, has died about 1796.

Given all the above, Lameth's ancestry goes something like this: Andrew Barbee d. 1699 Thomas Barbee d. 1752 (wife Margaret) Thomas Barbee b. abt 1720, d. abt 1796 (wife Margaret Fant). John? Barbee b. 1754 d. 1804-1809 (wife Susanna) Lameth Barbee b. 1785 Stafford VA, d. 1840, Vigo Co IN (wife Clarky Wigginton)

I hope this helps.

Rick Phillips

p.s. Lameth has been placed with John Barbee and Patty Gaines because he shows up in KY and some researchers just plugged him into the known Barbee there.Lameth was in Stafford in 1813, as I mentioned, and is only distantly related to John and Patty. If there are any records of Susan's estate in KY, it might reveal that her husband was John, or possibly Lameth or John S. claim John as a father - though not John of Lincoln Co KY/Crawford IL, but John of Stafford Co VA!
