The last name and parentage of the first wife of William Gifford, Jr. are unknown.[1] Her first name may have been Hannah.[1] The argument that her name was Hannah is based on the marriage record of Gershom Gifford, the son of William Gifford and his first wife, which was signed by Mary Bowerman, mother of the bride, and a "Hannah Gifford."[2] According to the 1974 NEHGR definitive article about William Gifford Sr and his descendants, "William Gifford of Sandwich, Mass. (d.1687)," the placement of Hannah's name is typical for the mother of the groom and, if Hannah Gifford was not Gershom's mother and William Jr.s wife, there were no other known Hannah Giffords in Falmouth at the time who might have been the witness.[2]
Date and Place of Birth
Based on the date of birth of her first known child (1676) and estimated date of birth of her husband (1654), Hannah (assuming that was her name) was probably born sometime in 1654-1658. She was probably born in either England or the Plymouth Colony.
Marriage and Children
Based on the date of birth of their first known child, Hannah (assuming that was her name) and William Gifford, Jr. were probably married about 1675.[1]
Hannah and William had the following children, all born in Falmouth:
Temperance, b. December 17, 1701,[5] probably never married,[5] living as of February 25, 1737[5]
Death
Based on the date of birth of Hannah's last born known child (December 17, 1701) and the date of William's second marriage (June 21, 1711), Hannah died sometime between the two dates,[1] presumable in Falmouth.
