Biography

Mary (surname unknown) was born probably in England about 1603, based on the birth of her first known child.

She married Thomas Howes[1] and immigrated to Massachusetts about 1637, along with two of their three children.

Mary was named executrix of her 1st husband’s estate Thomas Howes 6 Oct. 1665/6 "see photos".

After Thomas Howes death she married Thomas Prence sometime after February 26, 1665/6 and by August 1, 1668, as his 4th wife, following the death of his previous wives. Thomas Prence, esquire, was governor of the jurisdiction of New Plmouth for 16 years and died at Plymouth on March 29, 1673.[1]

Mary died on December 9, 1695,[1] in Yarmouth, Massachusetts, at the age of 92. She was buried on the 11th.

"Mist [ Mistress] Mary PRINCE late wife of Governor Thomas PRINCE died upon the 9th day of December 1695 and was buried upon ye 11th day of ye said 1695." [2]

Her inventory was taken on 31 December 1695, Her son Jeremiah Howes Sr. of Yarmouth gave his oath to the truth of the inventory.[3]

Research Notes

  • A maiden name of Burr has not been proven.[1] A previous version of this profile said she was born at Stisted, baptized at Shellow Bowelles Essex.
  • 2nd marriage: a previous version of this profile indicated that Thomas Prence was the son of Thomas PRENCE & Elizabeth TOLDERBY. Anderson does not give the mother's name.[1]
  • Burial. Previous version said, "Mary’s grave and the graves of husband Thomas and sons Joseph and Thomas never found. Family tradition gives their location as the Howes Family Cemetery, now on the National Register."

Thanks, Rick; I've added a link to the free version to the footnote.

Need to add there were only three sons, Joseph, Thomas and Jeremiah. There are too many children listed. She had none with her second husband Thomas Prence.
John and Elizabeth detached.

If you look at the history of the comments here, her name was changed five years ago to Unknown. Unfortunately, the profile was not protected then to prevent LNAB changes or control merge direction. I'm reverting the LNAB to unknown now.

It would be so helpful to hear from at least one, if not more, of the profile managers, please.

Many thanks for Bobbie & Anne’s responses and research.

Personal opinion: Since the author of the Howes genealogy was a descendant and named her as "Burr" in his wholly unsourced book, my thought is it falls under the category of "family tradition." With no documentary evidence, I would also go with "Unknown."

The attached file is the administrator's bond which only calls his wife Mistress Mary Howes. There is no one named Burr mentioned in the bond, so it is of no help in proving her maiden name. Further I examined his will & probate documents, which do not mention any of her relatives.

I reviewed & updated all the sources attached to this profile, plus the "Mayflower Descendants" page attached to this profile. I am unable to read the "Thomas Howes Administration" attached.

Should the surname "Burr" be changed to "Unknown" with a notation at the top of the biography.?

Comments? Discussion?

Thanks Bobbie. Since I've worked on this profile recently, I'll add notification to be aware, that publication is unsourced.
The "Burr" surname comes from this source:
  • Joshua Crowell Howes, Genealogy of the Howes family in America. Descendants of Thomas Howes, Yarmouth, Mass., 1637-1892 (Yarmouthport, Mass.: Printed for the author by F. Hallett, 1892)pp. 4,7

[Edit:] It does not provide any source. But at least we know where it originated.

merge completed. I'll combine biographies & make Research Notes.

Still needed:

  • LNAB - consider probably "unknown."
  • Merge the 2 Thomas Howes.
  • Extra children: John, Elizabeth, Benjamin.
  • Review, update the sources. Check for additional.
  • Inline citations

anything else that needs to be done to make this profile sparkle.

Burr-1213 and Unknown-228229 appear to represent the same person because: Would like to merge Mary Unknown and Mary Burr please
