Biography

The Boone Society and other “expert” researchers agree that any ancestors of George Boon(e) I is pure conjecture. Anyone finding definitive resources to prove any of the parentage should post that information in G2G.

Research Cautions

The Boone Society has not been able to find the marriage or birth records for George Boone II and his wife, Sarah and cannot confirm her maiden name of Uppey. Because “Uppey” is used in the Old James Boone Genealogy, the Boone Society accepts it, and “Oppey/Opie are names also under consideration.

However, The Boone Society does have burial records for both George II and his widow (written “wido” in the old records) Sarah which are recorded at Stoke Canon Parish, Exeter, England. (The Church at Stoke Canon is St Mary Magdalene.[1]) The original records are now located at the Devon Record Office in Exeter, England, and they read as follows:

Documents owned by the Boone Society:
George Boon was buried ye thirty first of May [1696].[2]
Sarah Boon wido was buried ye 5th of February 1708. (This would be 1709 New Style).[3]

Relying on the James Boone Genealogy that George II was age 60 at his death, then his approximate year of birth is calculated to be 1636; and Sarah, age 80 at her death, would have been born 1628.

I changed the locations to Devon accordance with the England Project Standards but they were reverted with the comment "incorrect change, Devon is a recent naming convention" Devon is not a neologism, it's earliest known use was in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in 823 (see the Survey of English Place-Names).

Devonshire results in an unknown county assignment in Wikitree.

Just confusing as we are supposed to use names as they were during the period, but not place names....OK....

Yes, Robin, you are correct -- the guiding principle in Help:Location Fields is to use the place names that "people at the time used". For events before 1974, this generally means using the names of 39 historic counties of England, as explained in the English profile standards.

As I understand it, "Devon" is the correct contemporary name. To confirm this, I just checked a random sample of PCC Wills from the 1600s. See, for example:

The village of Stoke Canon isn't within the city of Exeter, which became a county corporate in 1537 and as such is sometimes referred to as "the City and County of Exeter" (rather than "Devon") in some contemporary documents. See, e.g., the Will of John Clarke, 1636.

I hope that helps to clarify things.

(Edited to fix typo.)

Is there any evidence that Devonshire was ever a correct designation for Devon? I can't recall seeing any but it would be very useful to have some clarifying facts to identify exactly when the county was known by this name in case I need to use it as a location in the future. Thanks.

From the "County" Website

Devon is a synonym of Devonshire. Devonshire is the former (pre 1974) name for the county of Devon, England In 1974 the name Devon was formally adopted.

Hello profile managers! I'm planning on tidying up this profile and some other Boone family members on behalf of the England Project. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns. Thanks.

Wonderful....maybe the project would be willing to manage the profile and protect it against false parents being added. I have submitted a request to have this profile protected.

Hi Lynn,

If you have reliable sources, then let's coordinate. I have never found anything on Ancestry.com that was created during her lifetime....everything comes from notes people have put on Quaker records, or things that come from secondary sources, Find a Grave, etc, not the actual data. Which is why we depend so heavily on the Boone society and Hazel Spraker's work.

No evidence of her maiden name, also no evidence of a middle name. Middle names were not really a thing in 17th century England.

Why is there a birthday of June 1st if no records of her birth have been found?

Uppey-25 and Uppey-1 appear to represent the same person because: with only a birthdate on Uppey-25, all data matches

Uppey-24 and Uppey-1 appear to represent the same person because: identical dates

I would like to reduce the number of profile managers on this profile, you can stay on the trusted list, but, right now this profile is a subject of a lot of discussion and not a lot of participants.

Uppey-23 and Uppey-1 appear to represent the same person because: based on information from the Boone Society, this is the name of the wife of this George Boone and he only had one wife.
