Helena blev født ca 1180 som den yngste datter af den danske konge Valdemar den Store og hans kone Dronning Sofia.
Efter ægteskabet med hertug Vilhelm af Lüneburg sommeren 1202 fik hun titlen hertuginde Helene af Lüneburg.
I 1204 blev en søn født med navnet Otto, hertug af Braunschweig-Lüneburg.
Hertuginde Helene blev begravet i benediktinerklosteret Sankt Michael i Lüneburg.
Helene Valdemarsdatter, Princess of Denmark was the daughter of Valdemar I 'the Great' Knutsson, King of Denmark and Sophie of Polotzk.
She married William of Winchester Herzog von Braunschweig-Lüneburg, son of Heinrich V Herzog von Braunschweig-Lüneburg and Matilda of England, circa July 1202.
