Notes for GEORGE M. VARNADO:
George was born in South Carolina about 1791. He obtained a passport in Jones County, Georgia on 10 Mar 1810 and settled in Mississippi. He died without heirs as shown by probate of his estate in Adams County, Mississippi.

His wife is the widow of Richard Corey. She was the grand-daughter of "old" Richard Swayze and Sarah Horton.

George died possibly as early as Jan 1, 1840, leaving no widow, children or will. He left an estate of some thousand acres of land and fifty-one slaves. There was much litigation on this estate which can be found in the County Court files, Drawer # 64, Adams County, Miss. "We have gleaned a lot of information from studying these documents, and settled some false statements made by various people" says Mrs. Garnett Eliza Hughes, publisher of "The Descendants and Antecedents of George B. White and Lillie Daugherty White". Jeremiah H. Corey, was the Administrator of this estate.

While early documents say he had much land, I never have seen where it was sold and the proceeds distributed as we do his slaves and personal property.

I did find among the estate papers where Alfred B.Varnadoe gave power of attorney to Nathaniel Varnadoe on Dec. 10, 1841.
I also found where George Varnado bought 96 Acres of Land from Edmund R. Corey who was the Guardian of all persons and Estate of Louis S. Corey for the sum of Two Thousand Eight Hundred and Eighty Dollars payable in three annual payments.

This deed is signed & dated on the April 23, 1839.

Another document dated January 26, 1842 is given by Joseph T. Evans, Guardian of Lydia Corey acknowledging receipt from the heirs of George Varnadoe the sum of One Thousand Dollars to be in full for all claims the said Lydia Cory may be entitled to from the Estate of the said George Varnadoe in conveyance of property received from Nathan H. Luse, Executor of the Estate of Richard Cory Deceased and Father of said Lydia Corey.

Finally a deed given by Jeremiah H. Corey Administrator of George Varnado, Deceased to Thomas F. and Redding Davis who was highest bidder for the property. This sale is dated March 23, 1842 for Thirty Eight Dollars per acre. The acreage sold was two hundred and fifty eight acres more or less and being a part of the estate of George Varnadoe deceased.

The final consideration in the deed is for Nine Thousand Eight Hundred and Four Dollars.

History says his wife had 3 children by her first husband, Richard Corey, namely, Jeremiah, Sarah and Clarissa Corey. Richard died and she married George Varnado and had children who died young.

George M Varnado's estate was probated in Adams County, Mississippi.
