ISHAM VARNEDEAU, b. 1795, ,Orangeburg Dist, SC; d. Bef. 1830, ,Liberty, GA48; m. CHARITY ???; b. 1795, ,,GA; d. ,Liberty, GA.
Isham Varnedeau probably came to Pike Cty. Mississippi with his father. (See Dates Later) Samuel's sons, Leonard and Moses Varnado, obtained passports in Jones County, Ga. in Oct. 1809 which stated they had arrived there in late last winter. George Varnedo was issued a passport on March 2, 1810 which stated that he was from the Orangeburg Dist. of S. C. Samuel Vernando and family were issued a passport on March 18, 1811 which states that he was from the Orangeburg Dist. of S. C. and that he had a wife and seven children and two slaves.
Surname spelling of these families in very interesting. Insofar as these two brothers are concerned, Nathaniel's descendants chose the Varnedoe spelling in effect today. Isham signed his name Varnedeau below. His son, Alfred B., had a son, James I. Varnedore, which line uses for the most part the Varnedore spelling today.
I have found that Nathaniel's spelling and influence so strong that the Varnadores tend to change their spellings to Varnedoe even after 1920. Samuel's sons, who came to Miss. and La., spell their names Varnado, Samuel's brother, Henry, settled in Georgia and use Varnadoe and his brother, Leonard, who remained in S. C. used Varnadore.
When Samuel came to Pike County, Ms. Nathaniel was only 21 and Isham 16. Nathaniel and Isham apparently were not satisfied with the Miss. Territory and returned to Georgia where they had stopped earlier on their trip from S. C. to make a crop.
The document below shows Isham had returned to Ga. to settle and other data comes to light after study. The first document is listed below. Respectfully yr Excellency obt. Servt. Isham Varnedeau Original on file with the Sureveyor General Dept., Archives and Records Bldg. Atlanta, Ga. 30334. (The spelling of his name is exactly as shown in the document.) We know from this record that Isham was in Chatham County, Ga. in 1821. He was in Bryan County, Ga. in 1827 as the records show he participated in a land lottery in that state in that year and that he drew Lot # 126, Lee County District 16. Isham must have died before the 1830 census since only his wife and children appear in the Liberty County census that year. He stated he had a wife and two children in the petition to participate in the lottery. However, only Alfred's interest is recorded in the estate settlement in Adams County, Ms. This estate settlement where Nathaniel signs as A. B.'s attorney shows that (1) Isham had died (2) that A. B. was alive and grown or Nathaniel would have signed as guardian. (3) Another legal document found in Liberty County, Ga. names A. B. as Nathaniel's nephew, and names A. B.'s minor children. See A. B. Varnedore and James I. Varnedore following for more about this document. Isham was a member of Midway Congregational Church according to their records.[1]
Notes for CHARITY ???: Charity Varnidore appears in the 1830 census as a female family head age 30-40. Since Isham does not appear, we can assume he had died. With Charity is Alfred B. indicated as a male child between 10-15 years of age or born about 1818 and a daughter whose name we do not know between 5-10 years of age. This daughter has been found at least by oral word of mouth to be Mary Varnadoe who married Young Davis. Why she is not shown in the Mississippi estate settlement of George Varnado in 1842 is not known. Sources: Other : 1830 Ga. Liberty Cty. Page 54 Charity Varnidore Age 30-40 Other : 1830 Ga. I located them all living in Pike County, Mississippi with their families on the census except for Isham Ellis who I found in Georgia. Samuel and his children were in Pike also.
