Biography

Obituary: Emzy B. Varney died February 4, 1952, in a Williamson hospital. Mr. Varney was a minister of the Church of God for 28 years. He was born November 27, 1878, in Pike County, KY, a son of the late Asa and Basha Murphy Varney. His wife, Martha Ellen Howell Varney, preceded him in death October 17, 1919. Two sons, Wade and Robert, precede him in death. He is survived by his wife Sadie Sammons, who he married 08 Jan 1921. Other survivors are seven children: Ernest of Ragland, Price of Barboursville, Mrs. Mattie Copas, Blue Creek, OH, Mrs. Hattie Thurston, Oak Hill, OH, Mrs. Georgia York of Louisa, KY, Mrs. Sadie Adkins, Kenova, WV, and Mrs. Ruth Porter, Chatteroy; one step-son, Arthur Sammons of Marrow Bone, WV; 44 grandchildren, 57 great grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren. Surviving siblings are Mrs. Nancy McCoy and Mrs. Luma Varney, Matewan, WV, Charles of Belfrey, KY, William of Blackberry City, Wade of Delbarton and Ace of Spencer. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday. Interment was in Mountain View Memory Garden at Maher, WV. Big Sandy News, February 12, 1959
