Biography

Wayne J. Domes, the researcher, has untangled a confusion. Mehitabel Hadley-23 married Isaac Vermilyea-10, s/o Isaac Vermilyea-8.

Isaac Vermilyea-10 is the first cousin of Abraham Vermilye-1, who married Mehitabel Betts b. 1727, m. 1745, d/o William Betts 1703-1773 and Rachel Smith b. 1707

Both Mehitabel Hadley and Mehitabel Betts are themselves related, thus the same first name used, and are related through Joseph Hadley-294 and his wife Mehitabel Tippett-355, d/o George Tibbetts-48 and his wife Mehitabel Betts-286, d/o William Betts-2506, who was the founder of the Betts family line of Lower Yonkers, NY.

Thus we have 2 male cousins who both married girls named Mehitabel, but they are not the same girl, but they are first cousins, once removed.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Abraham by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Abraham:

Wayne J. Domes is a Vermilyea descendant, tracing back to Gerardus Vermilyea (c.1739-1799), younger half-brother of Abraham Vermilyea (c.1721-1784); Domes has been researching the Vermilyeas on and off for nearly fifty years, and am regarded as the leading authority on the family. Domes is the researcher who first identified the wife of Abraham Vermilyea (c.1721-1784) as Mehitabel Betts, and correctly identified the wife of Abraham Vermilyea, Jr. (1755-1829) as Mary Brouwer (1767-1845), daughter of Nazareth Brouwer (c.1736-1790.) This branch of the Vermilyeas, like others, was very thinly, and inaccurately, covered in the New Harlem Register (1903), and the Revised History of Harlem (1904).The Universal Tree at Family Search, the free site www.familysearch.org Abraham Vermilyea (1755-1829) can be found there under the unique i.d. MP23-KLJ.)

Based on the sourced Probate Record listed above, I believe William Vermilyea (Vermilyea-42) should be attached as a son of both Abraham Vermiyea (Vermilye-1) and Mehitabel Betts (Betts-4680). He is currently listed as a son of Isaac Vermilyea (Vermilyea-10), of which no mention is made of William in Isaac's Will. In addition, two published genealogies (one by David Benton, Jr. and Sarah Bingham, the other by Sandra Vermilyea Todd), have Abraham as his father, using both probate records and debt notes as evidence.
