Marie Vigneault was born about 1740 in Acadie, daughter of Jean Baptiste Vigneau and Agnès Poirier.
Beaubassin
Marie and her family resided in Beaubassin where three of her younger siblings were baptized: Jean-Baptiste 1742, Théotiste 1744 and Amand in 1746.
Ile Royale (Cape Breton)
Around 1751-1752, her parents Jean-Baptiste and Agnès decided to settle on Ile Royale ( now Cape Breton), seeking a better life for the family. In 1752, six months after their arrival, they were recorded on the detailed La Roque census at Port Toulouse, Ile Royale, with two sons and four daughters. Marie was 12 years of age. They were given land and rations for two years, but had not built a house yet nor cleared the land. [1]

Return to Beaubassin
Since living conditions were difficult there, and the rocky soil not conducive to farming, they decided to return to their homeland where they were recorded on the 1755 census, in Baie-Verte with 4 daughters. [2] There were several members of the Vigneau family living in Baie-Verte: his brothers Jacques and Simon, as well as his nephews Jacques, Joseph and Pierre Vigneau and their families.
Deportation to Georgia
In 1755, Marie, her family and the Vigneau clan were deported to Georgia aboard the ship Jolly Philipp. After a few months in the colony, they planned to return to Acadie by sea. The governor of Georgia, happy to see them leave, even gave them small boats and food. The extended Vigneau family (about 140 members) sailed north along the coast without any problems until they reached Cape Cod in August 1756, where they were arrested and brought to Boston. [3] [2]
The Acadian exiles were not especially welcome in Massachusetts, because they spoke a different language and worshiped differently, and were also considered a financial burden by some. In order to control the Acadian prisoners, a law was passed by the Massachusetts legislature in 1755 to distribute the Acadians in different towns and to place the children as servants or apprentices in Anglo-Protestant families. For seven years, the exiles were not allowed to leave the limits of the village assigned to them, otherwise they could be arrested and pay fines. They were detained in Massachusetts until the end of the war in 1763. [4] Jean-Baptiste was recorded in Massachusetts in 1763 with 3 sons and 4 daughters, but no wife was listed. [5] Marie lost her mother sometime between 1758 (birth of her last child) and 1763, possibly in Massachusetts, but the exact location is not known.
Immigration to Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon
"February 10, 1763, the treaty of Paris ends the Seven Years’ War. More than 5,000 Acadians detained in the Anglo-American colonies and in England are finally free to leave. A few decide to remain where they are but the majority head toward Québec, the Antilles, Acadia, France, Saint- Pierre-et-Miquelon and Louisiana between the years 1763 and 1769. This is the most important movement of Acadians since the Deportation." [6] A group of 112 Acadians, lead by Marie's uncle Jacques Vigneau, arrived at the French territory of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon on 1 October 1763. [4]
Marriage
Marie (23) married Claude Bourgeois (29) on 9 January 1764 in Miquelon, Saint Pierre and Miquelon. [7] Their first two children Anastasie and Jean-Baptiste were born in Miquelon.
Their known children were:
France in 1767 and 1778
The following year, the French government reversed its decision and many Acadians returned to Miquelon. The growing family was recorded in Miquelon in 1776 with 5 children. They owned a house, a stable, a horse, 2 cattle and a boat.[9]

In the fall of 1778, the British took control of the islands, destroyed the homes and boats, and deported the entire population to France. [6] The islands changed hands several times after that. By 1785 they were back in Miquelon. The detailed census taken that year showed that Claude, age 50, was a fisherman and a carpenter. His eldest son was also a fisherman. He was co-owner of a boat for fishing, and also dried fish without the use of a hired hand. He owned 2 cattle and a garden. The family later settled at Nicolet in Québec.[10]

Immigration to the Province of Québec
By 1790, they had settled in the Province of Québec. Their daughter Marie Anastasie was married in Nicolet on 22 November 1790. More research is needed for the details of their immigration. Thus, the family avoided being deported again from Miquelon in 1794 when the islands were occupied once more by the British, and many Acadians were deported to Halifax and Boston. [6] [11]
Death
Marie died on 12 February 1819 in Saint Grégoire, Nicolet, Bas-Canada, aged 78. [12] She was given 88 years of age. Witnesses were Jacques and Joseph Bourgeois, her sons.
