Biography

Birth

Agathy (___) was probably born in about 1720 based on the estimated birth date of her oldest known child. Her origins are uncertain, but many researchers believe her last name at birth was Wallen or Walling, based on the 1765 land transaction with her husband discussed below[1] and the common migration pattern of the Blevins and Walling families from Maryland to Virginia.

Marriage

Agathy married William Blevins, probably by about 1737 based on the estimated birth date of their oldest known children. On 19 September 1760 when William Blevins and Agathy his wife conveyed a tract of land in Halifax County, Colony of Virginia, to "Thomas Wallens," probably this Thomas Walling.[1]

Death

No further reference to Agathy has been identified after the 1760 land transaction. She died after making this deed on 19 September 1760, probably in Virginia.

Children

William and, probably, Agathy, had at least two children:

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Agathy by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Agathy:

Walling-71 and Walden-776 are not ready to be merged because: These are intended to be the same person, but her LNAB is unknown. There is no evidence that she was a Walling. Both profiles are duplicates of Agathy (Unknown) Blevins (Unknown-562024). Clean up is pending.

Walden-776 and Unknown-562024 appear to represent the same person because: duplicates; please merge. As Scott noted previously, her surname is unknown.
Her maiden name is Unknown. There is no evidence that the wife of William Blevins was a Wallen. This is a common error. All that is known of her is that her first name was "Agathy", possibly a nickname for Agnes or Agatha. This profile is a duplicate of Agathy (Unknown) Blevins (bef.1720-aft.1765)

For possible additional research from Les Blevins several years ago as a comment on husband's profile:

"Book 5, page 525, Agatha Blevins grantor and her heirs from Thos. Wallens - 125 acres; Sep. 19, 1765 ... widow, and her heirs sold Thomas Wallen 127 acres in Halifax Co, VA" 4. (Perhaps where confusion starts) ... his wife, of Halifax Co. to Thomas Waltens (sic Wallens?) of same, for & 50, 125 acres, beg."

Thanks Jillaine. I have substituted a citation to the original deed record. It does not shed any further light on her origins though - it just confirms that Agathy was the spouse of William Blevins, and that they conveyed land to Thomas Wallen.

The Thomas Wallen they may have conveyed land to was quite possibly this one: Walling-179.

That Thomas, like Agathy's husband William Blevins, migrated from Maryland to southwestern Virginia about the same time. That Thomas also got married about the time of the land conveyance.

I could certainly see a researcher suggesting a familial connection, but it's just one theory.

But wait, Scott... (I should have waited until I'd had more coffee). Isn't the land she and her husband William Blevins conveyed to a Thomas Wallens, land that she (and her heirs) received from [another?] Thomas Wallens?

Thomas Walling-179 was son of [corrected] Elisha Wallens. Elisha Wallens Sr's father (another Thomas) --- like Agatha's husband's father, started out in Rhode Island, moved south (to New Jersey) then the elder Thomas' children emigrated south to Maryland, then southwestern Virginia-- same / similar migration path of William Blevins.

If she (and her heirs) was conveying land received from a Thomas Wallen to the same or another Thomas Wallen, that strengthens the Wallen-as-LNAB theory for me.

I agree, it seems very plausible now that her LNAB really was Walling (or Wallen, etc.). I have revised the profiles for William and Agathy to reflect this based on the 1765 deed. However, I don't see any source for the premise that this property they conveyed to Thomas in 1765 is land Agathy received from another Thomas Wallens - where is that coming from? I agree, if Agathy inherited this tract from a Wallens, that would button up the LNAB issue.

Apparently the land deed says ""Book 5, page 525, Agatha Blevins grantor and her heirs from Thos. Wallens - 125 acres; Sep. 19, 1765"
posted by Jillaine Smith
That is the deed cited in the profile - it is a deed from William Blevins & Agathy his wife to Thomas Wallens, not vice versa. The deed doesn't state how William and/or Agathy came to be the owners of the land being transferred.

Just went through the original deed (or image thereof) cited in the narrative above-- although I read 1760, not 1765... and yes, it makes no reference to Agatha's heirs. This is another reason it is so important to include full citations, linked to the original where possible, so we can each read for ourselves what it actually says.

You're right, good catch, it is 1760. I fixed that in the bio.

In his book, Les Blevins actually claims that Agnes Wallen/Walling was the wife of the man he calls "William # 4", i.e., William Blevins (abt.1735-abt.1825), and he claims they married in 1759. See Blevins, The Longhunters, at 42, 44, 171, 187, & 194. Apparently, he later changed his mind and concluded it was "William # 4", i.e., William Blevins (abt.1718-aft.1778). However, he doesn't cite any source for either claim other than the cryptic reference in this profile to the work of "Long term Blevins researcher Owen Blevins." Unless anyone knows what that means, this appears to be speculative.

I am trying to figure out whether there is any documented source for the claim that the wife of William Blevins was named Agnes Walling. I am trying to locate the 1765 Halifax deed by William and his wife "Agathy" cited in this profile which is supposed to be this Agnes, but it seems that even if it exists, it would only establish that his wife was named "Agathy (___), not that she was Agnes Walling. Is anyone aware of a reliable source for this claim?

I am not seeing any sources which identify Agnes as the daughter of Elisha Walling and Mary Blevins. Neither Carolyn Wallin (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Carolyn_D._Wallin%2C_Elisha_Wallen_The_Longhunter) or Maribelle Wilder (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:A_Wallen-Walling_Genealogy) identify a daughter named Agnes. I have marked the relationship as uncertain.

I have detached this relationship given the lack of any source for it. Please do not reattach as a child to Elisha Walling without first posting a comment on his profile for discussion and citing a reliable source.

Hello Bruce Danner,

Would you consider changing the last name at birth from 'Walden' to 'Walling'? Just a thought since the majority of the family is spelled that way.

Thanks, Cindy Williams Lesure

Walden-776 and Wallen-329 are not ready to be merged because: Wallen-329 began having children in 1742 so she had to have been born ca 1730 or before although the profiles are obviously about the same person.
