Local Brevities[11]

The death occurred on October 7, at the Royal North Shore Hospital of Miss Alice Mary Walker, daughter of Mrs. Sarah Walker , and the late Mr. George Walker, formerly of Mudgee. The deceased lady was 58 years of age. The late Mr. George Walker was in Mudgee in the early days, as an auctioneer, in partnership with Mr J. M. Cox, of Sydney, and father of Mr. Herbert Cox, of Mudgee. Mr. Walker was for a long time an alderman of Mudgee, and was for several years in succession mayor of the town, and altogether was one of the most trusted, esteemed and popular of the old time townsmen. He had as his colleagues in the Council (amongst others), that Veteran Mudgeeite, Mr. Eugene Daly, the late Messrs. John Mills, Richard Hughson, Daniel Cassin, Daniel Earles, James Honeysett and Frank, Tindale. It was during Mr. Walter's mayoralty that the Malakoff was built as a water supply, and the water carts were allowed to cart water from it, for distribution, in the town, instead of from the river itself as heretofore. The water was pumped into the malakoff from a beautiful well of clear, clean water on the flat near to where the swimming bath buildings now are. With the advent of the clean pure water sickness was practically banished from the town and whilst other towns in the State (and in the district) were subjected to periodical and often destructive and disastrous visitations of typhoid Mudgee was invariably free from the scourge. In those days the seasons were remarkable (and remarkably good). There were abundant and heavy rains, water and summer alike, year in and year out, and the river was, never mind what was the time of the year, invariably in flood. Mr. George Walker is a brother of the late Mr Matthew Walker, who was also a resident and useful and popular townsman of old time Mudgee. He was for many years postmaster at Mudgee and had as his assistant the late Mr. George Ramsay, who was afterwards manager of the Australian Joint Stock Bank (now the Australian Bank of Commerce) at Mudgee. He was a brother of Mrs. H.A. Lowe, of Goree. A third Walker brother is Mr W. Walker, solicitor of Windsor, who was for many years a member of the Legislative Council. One of the late Mr. George Walker's nephews was elected three years ago to the Legislative Assembly for the State? seat of Nepean. Mr. Walker ??? as an independent, and as such defeated the sitting member, ??? Brinsley Hall, who was the Government nominee and the official National candidate.
