Biography

John Wallace was born September 10, 1797 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a son of William Walles Wallace and Margaret Bender Paintre.

He ran away from home when a boy and went to sea, joining the crew of a vessel bound for the West Indies, but it was not long before he found that the life of a sea faring lad was not just what he had pictured it would be. The vessel had not proceeded far when the brutal captain whaled young John with a rope's end, which effectually dampened the youth's ardor as a sailor and the lad slipped over the side of the vessel and swam several miles to the Virginia shore, where he presently landed, nearly dead, but thoroughly cured of his desire for a sailor's life.[1]

He was a private Captain John Spencer's Company SPI in the War of 1812.

John made his home in Carlisle, Pennsylvania where married Nancy Agnes Ann Culbertson May 5,1825. Together they had three children: Rebecca Culbertson, William and Sarah Ellen.[2] Later they moved to Martin's Ferry, Ohio, and again later to Harrisburg, where he spent the remainder of his life.

After his wife, Nancy died, John remarried to Mary Officer on November 25 1852 in Columbia, Lancaster, Pennsylvania.[3][4]

He and his wife were Methodists, and active participants in the work of the "underground railroad" thereabout during the days before the Civil War.[1]

After his second wife died, he married Agatha Bell on March 10, 1868 in Pickaway, Ohio, United States.[5][6]

John died January 25, 1877 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio.[7] He is buried in Green Lawn Cemetery in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio, United States.[7]
