Althea was born in 1918 in Dixfield, Maine in the same house at 37 Main Street, Dixfield where she lived at the time of her death 90.5 years later. She was a stay-at-home mom until the last two of her children were in high school when she became a librarian aide at Dirigo High School in Dixfield, Maine. In 1969 she began as the substitute librarian at Ludden Memorial Library, Dixfield, where she worked until age 72.
Althea was an accomplished pianist, performing musical duties for the Grange, Senior Citizens, and various churches. A life-long member of the Grange, she had her first garden at age 5 when her grandfather Will Holman helped her start her first garden. She reached her goal of 85 years of consecutive gardens harvested as she turned 90. She gave a great deal of thought in her late 80's, consulting leading authorities, before deciding to plant peach and apple trees that bear fruit after 3 years rather than five years. She selected the 3 year varieties that bore the first crop her last fall.
Althea spent her early years living in her grandparents Will and Winnie Holman's house, then lived near her grandparents Greenleaf Melville and Eliza Small Bean Walton apple farm in East Dixfield where her father worked. Upon his death in 1934, she went back to live with Will S. and Nettie Holman in Dixfield where she helped her grandmother with phone operator duties operating the telephone switchboard located in their front room.
Althea's special place was at the Edgewater Colony in Harpswell, Maine where her grandparents had a cottage. She told of celebrating Christmas there with her maternal grandparents at an early age and of swimming in the ocean on Christmas Day, running back to the car to be wrapped in bear skin rugs.
