John was born in Pennsylvania to William Ward and Rebecca Unknown . He was christened on 28 November 1838 in the Presbyterian Church in Allen Twp., Northampton, Pennsylvania.[1]
John's father was William Ward, born in Ireland and a veteran of the Napoleonic Wars, having served at Waterloo.[2] He married Elizabeth Jones. He and his wife had a daughter, Ella E. Ward, born 28 March 1861 in Mount Holly, Pennsylvania.[3][4]
