Various Legal Records of Deeds, Wills, Property Transfers, etc. from Estates of James Warren, Sr. & Mathew & Elizabeth (Betsy/Betty) Warren Whittle  :

Amherst Co., Virginia was created from Albemarle Co in 1761 which was created from Goochland Co in 1744 which was created from Henrico Co in 1728. Henrico was an original Co. created in 1634. These and others, including Louisa Co., were all located in the tidewater area of Virginia and are confusing because records are inconsistent in referring to current names vs. names of parent counties. Matthew Whittle married Elizabeth (Betsy) Warren before 1747 when land records show them as selling land in Albemarle Co., which included Amherst Co. until 1761. Other documentation from that era is very difficult, as the Amherst County Court House was reduced to embers by fire about 1789. Most records, except land records, were reduced to ashes.

This land lay in present day Albemarle Co., somewhere north of Charlottesville. Charles Caffry (m. Sarah Warren) lived on 300 nearby acres which lay on both sides of Moors Creek, a branch of the Rivanna River. Matthew Whittle (m. Elizabeth Warren) lived on a plantation in Hanover County on the Hanover-Goochland county line, his land adjoined James Warren's land.

The name Grace in this family would suggest that this man is a descendant of John Warren and Maudlin Creed. John's father was David Warren noted in Surry records and he had a brother named James. None of these men were born in Surry and are noted to live in other places in Virginia as well. They are all thought to be sons of Edward Warren. Edward Warren was closely associated with Nicholas Mereweather.

Edward Warren's wife was Susan Lane

1. David 1728

John married Maudlin Creed circa 1775. Had two sons named John and James fates unknown.

James

2. Robert of Surry born 1725

3. John likely John Warren of Rappahannock County associated with David above.

4. William Fate Unknown

5. James

2nd Wife Alice Croxten

3rd wife Grace Creed - mother of Maudlin.
