The wife of William WASHBURN was Jane NICHOLS, not WHITEHEAD. She was baptized on 3 Nov. 1603 in Sedgeberrow, Worcester Co., England, the daughter of Francis NICHOLS and his wife Frances WIMARKE, who were married at Sedgeberrow on 24 Jan. 1599/1600. See the excellent article about this family by Neil D. Thompson, CG, FASG, in "The American Genealogist", Oct. 2000, pp. 267-271, entitled "The English Origin of Sergeant Francis Nichols of Stratford, Connecticut."
William and Jane (NICHOLS) WASHBURN lived in Bengeworth, in the parish of Evesham, Worcester Co., England, which is only a couple of miles from Sedgeberrow. Unfortunately most of the baptismal records for the time period when their children were born have not survived. A few years of Bishop's Transcripts have survived, and from these meager records and the will of William WASHBURN in Hempstead, Long Island, we can piece together their children:
Hope Washburn, second son of William and Jane (Nichols) Washburne, born in Bengeworth, Worcestershire, England, in about 1635,[2] married Mary Stiles, daughter of Francis and Sarah Stiles, of Windsor, Connecticut Colony,[3] in ca. 1660 in Stratford, CT.[4] Hope Washburn settled first in Stratford, Fairfield Co., CT, until 1685, when they moved to Derby, New Haven Co., CT. His name was on the list of inhabitants in Stratford dated 28 Mar. 1668, as one of the “outlivers,” and his cousins Isaak Nickolls and Caleb Nickolls, and brother-in-law, Ephraim Styles, were also listed as inhabitants of Stratford in 1668, without being designated as “outlivers.”[5] He was a freeman in Stratford in 1669,[6] and he was the main heir of the estate of his father, William Washburn.[7] The home lot of Hope Washbans was laid out in Derby, CT, on 22 Dec. 1685, containing 4 acres,[8] and his name was frequently spelled “Washban” in the Derby town records.
Hope Washburn died in ca. 1693 in Derby, CT,[9] and his heirs, namely his widow Mary Washban, Will Washban and Samuell Washban, Mary Washban and Jane Washban, the children of Hope Washban, agreed to divide the lands that had belonged to their father in Derby on 16 Nov. 1696, the eldest son William Washban to have the house that Hope Washban died in and the home lot and all the land in the field above the hill, son Samuell Washban to have the house and homestead that was formerly John Grivens or Grifins, and the land belonging to that house, and all the land below the hill with all the rest of the land, along with what division lands were due to him to be divided equally between William Washban and Samuell Washban, reserving the liberty for the widow Mary Washban to dwell in which house she pleases, and to have the use of one third part of all the land during her widowhood. All debts due from the estate to be paid half by William Washbon and half by Samuell Washbon, signed by Mary Washban, the relict, William Washban, the eldest son, Samuell Washban, Sarah Washban, and John Johnson.[10][11] The widow Mary Washburn was steated at a Derby town meeting on 26 Dec. 1707,[12] and she died a widow on 11 Jan. 1712 in Derby.[13]
+ 93 iii William3 Washburn, born on 16 Mar. 1668/9 in Stratford, CT,[168] married Hannah2 Wooster, daughter of Edward1 and Tabitha (Tomlinson) Wooster, of Derby, CT,[169] on 20 Aug. 1696 in Derby,[170] and they also lived in Derby. (Continued in Children of Hope Washburn and Mary Stiles.)
+ 94 iv Samuel3 Washburn, born on 15 Mar. 1670/1 in Stratford, CT,[171] married Susanna (___) Wooster, widow of Sylvester Wooster, of Derby, CT,[172] on 30 Nov. 1714 in Derby,[173] and they also lived in Derby. (Continued in Children of Hope Washburn and Mary Stiles.)
95 v Ephraim3 Washburn, born on 31 Aug. 1673 in Stratford, CT,[174] married Sarah Partridge, and they settled in Medfield, CT, but he died in 1696,[175] and she may have remarried. He was not mentioned in the division of his father’s land in Nov. 1696, and he probably had no children.
+ 96 vi Mary3 Washburn, supposedly born in July 1675 in Stratford, CT,[176] married John Johnson, of Derby, CT, son of Jeremiah and Sarah (Hotchkiss) Johnson,[177] on 24 Sept. 1694 in Derby,[178] and they also lived in Derby. (Continued in Children of Hope Washburn and Mary Stiles.)
97 vii Jane Washburn, supposedly born on 6 Aug. 1678 in Stratford, CT,[179] chose her mother Mary Washburn as her guardian after her father died in 1696, marriage not found.[180]
Hope was born about 1636. He passed away in 1696.
