Youngest of 6 children-3 boys, 3 girls-somewhere not too far from Richmond, VA. Post office was Stoney Gap, VA. Close to age 18 he joined the Confederate Army under Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee. He was with Jackson at Bull Run. He was taken as a POW in Gettysburg after being shot in the shoulder by a minna ball, and taken to the Union prison at Point Lookout, MD. When released at the end of war he went home to visit his parents. About 1867 or '68 he headed west, came to West Port which is now Kansas City, MO. there he got work with an overland freighting company as a teamster--Kansas City to Denver--at $12/month with the privilege of boarding under his wagon. At some point he landed in Seneca, KS, where he met and married Catherine Neal in 1869. She passed in 1880 leaving him with 3 boys. 16 Sept 1883 he married Ann Marie [Anne Mariah] Hundley Carlyle. They had 3 children-Georgie Ann (8 Aug 1884), Clarence E. (9 May 1886) and Claude Lawrence (19 Feb 1888). Ann Marie passed in March 1888. After 18 months George married Sarah Ellen (Ralston)Brown, widow. At the age of 48 he became a railroad section laborer at the rate of 12 1/2 cents/hour. He also rented a house with 3 rooms and 38 acres. He kept a team, one or two cows, a few hogs and chickens.
