Horatio's father, William, died when Horatio was almost six months old.
In 1851, at the age of eleven, Horatio was living with his mother and sister in Bridge St, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. His mother was a proprietor of houses and Horatio was a scholar (at home).[3]
