John Thomas Ding Watson (Tom) was born on August 14th 1874 in North Collingham, Nottinghamshire [1]. He was the son of Henry Watson and Sarah Johnson. AlthoughTom was born in Nottinghamshire he spent most of his childhood near Grantham, Lincolnshire [2]. As a teenager he trained as a salesman, a profession he carried on for the rest of his life [3].
As a young man Tom moved to Manchester, living in lodgings, presumably with his employer, becoming a furniture salesman. He lived near his future wife, both lived in Clowes Street, Chorlton [4].
Tom married Charlotte Ethel Heggs on March 16th, 1904 in St. Mark, Gorton, Manchester. He was aged 29 years 7 months. [5]. They initially set up home in Gorton, Manchester where their first three children were born [6]. Sometime in 1911 they moved south to the Sheerness, Isle of Sheppy, Kent where they lived for the rest of their lives [7][8].
Tom continued his profession as a salesman in Sheerness, becoming manager of a furniture dealers store. When the owner of the store retired, John became the owner of the shop. Watson's Hardware Store was a prominent shop along Sheerness High Street. He served as a special constable in the police.
On the 11th June 1952 Tom left London for Sydney, Australia to visit his daughter Rosalyn. He sailed on the P and O liner Mooltan[9]
Tom died on the 21st July 1956 in Chatham, Kent. He was aged 81 years 9 months [10]. He left his entire estate to his wife Charlotte Ethel, valued at £724 10s 9d. [11].
