David Harris Watson was born in Virginia about 1824. Parents Shamei Watson and Mary Frances Farthing were wed in Pittsylvania, Virgnia in 1823.
Father Shamei passed away in 1839, and widowed mother Mary is shown in Pittsylvania in the 1850 census with the following children:

On November 5 of 1850, David married Susan Giles. By 1860 in northern Pittsylvania they had 3 children. David H Watson M 35 Virginia Susan Watson F 28 Virginia Dalma N Watson F 8 Virginia Mary E Watson F 6 Virginia John C Watson M 3 Virginia
On July 2, 1861, David H. Watson and brothers Joab and William enlisted in the CSA, and were with Company H of the 38th Virginia Infantry. William got Typhoid Fever and died in September. David got sick with rheumatism, and was discharged in November of 1861. Later on, he was exempt because he was a shoemaker. Brother Shimei joined the 53rd Virginia Infantry, fought at Gettysburg, and survived being a POW.
