Biography

Dicy was born in 1810. According to info extracted from Alexander Douglas family file, there is some confusion regarding Dicy's family name. In some places, she is listed as Dicy Branch, as some family traditions has it that her mother was Mary Branch, but her father could have been Ezekiel 'Zeke' Sellers. This info from a letter from Mrs JoAnne Bennett, 1965. Also, per death certificate of Henry Douglas, his mother was listed as Dicey Cellers (Sellers). [1]Also, she is listed as being born in Appling County, but this county was not created until 1819. She passed away in 1887.

Research Notes

Some genealogists seem to think she was the out of wedlock daughter of Ezekiel Sellers and Mary Branch; reared by James and Catherine Watson of Appling Co[2] Census records indicate a birth between 1805 and 1813.

Dicy Watson was born in 1812, USA. She married Alexander Douglas. They had the following children:

  1. Frederick Douglas (1829 - 1912)
  2. Frances Douglas Meeks (1832 - 1913)
  3. William Douglas (1834 - 1862)
  4. Dicy Douglas Waters (1837 - 1916)
  5. Alexander B. Douglas (1838 - 1900)
  6. America Douglas (1842 - 1915)
  7. Penelope Douglas Denton (1845 - 1898)
  8. Staten Douglas (1848 - 1926)
  9. Catherine Douglas Wilcox (1849 - 1920)
  10. Simon Quarterman Douglas (1852 - 1910)
  11. Henry Douglas (1855 - 1929

Dicy died on Oct. 11, 1887 in Appling County, Georgia, USA. She was buried at the Douglas Chapel Cemetery in Alma, Georgia.[3]

I know this church where she is buried. My children’s grandparents are also buried there. It likely has records to resolve the question of her maiden name. This is also a sponsored Find a Grave Memorial. The sponsor likely has sources and/or personal knowledge passed down from grandparents. This town is amazingly small so everyone there likely knows the answer to this question. I suggest calling the church where the cemetery is located.

Watson-3249 and Branch-696 appear to represent the same person because: intended to be the same person. In reading the information at Find a Grave it seems likely that her maiden name is Branch, while she was raised in the Watson family.

Branch-1079 and Branch-696 appear to represent the same person because: death date and husband are the same, the marriage, and birth information had no primary sources to support the information. Census records have multiple dates, going with the date on Find a Grave

It's hard to come by a source for either Watson or Branch, but what is clear is that they're the same person. Is there a way to merge without deciding which it is?

Steve, could you please post a source for this? Thanks!

Watson-3249 and Branch-696 appear to represent the same person because: Family history has always maintained that her mother was a Branch but that she was reared by the Watsons. Census data suggests this as well.
