Private in the all-black 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry regiment, Company I. Enlisted on 28 April 1863 from Cincinnati, Ohio. He was 19 years old, single and working as a shoemaker when he enlisted. He was wounded in action on 18 July 1863 at Fort Wagner. Discharged 2 July 1864 from Black Island, South Carolina.
