Biography

John was born about 1794. (Aged 83 at death in 1877)[1]

He was the son of William Watt and Janet White. He was born in Bathgate, Linlithgowshire.[2][3][4]

He married Margaret Neill in the Mid Calder parish about 14/6/1833. [5]

Their children included Julia (born 1834), James (1836), David (1837), and Jessie (1842). Julia and James are listed in some censuses as being born at Bellsquarry, a village in the parish of Mid Calder which in 1845 was chiefly inhabited by 'labourers and mechanics.'[6]

In 1861, John (65) and Margaret (65) were living at 9 Dunbar St, Edinburgh, along with children Julia (27), James (25), a cabinet maker, and Jessie (19). John's occupation was Police Constable.[3]

In 1871, John (76) and Margaret (75), were living at 35 Home (or Horne) St, Edinburgh, John's occupation was listed as Formerly Police Constable. Julia (36) and Jessie (28) were also living there, both listed as Straw Bonnet Makers.[4]

He passed away in 1877, at 35 Home (or Horne) St, Edinburgh. Cause of death given as Old Age, and the informant was his son James.[1]
