Biography

Anne (or Ann) Waye was born 1691 in Stafford County, Virginia.
Her first husband was Bryan Young.
She married John Peyton on May 9, 1727 (also in Stafford County). Ann (Waye) Peyton died in 1750 at Stony Hill in Stafford County.
I can find no record of anyone with that surname in all of Virginia in that time period. However, I do find several people surnamed WAUGH in Stafford county--and even more coincidentally involved in land transactions with PEYTONs around 1700 ! It occurs to me that since Anne's surname was reported as WAYE by PEYTON researchers and WAGE by YOUNG researchers that the surname WAUGH with its peculiar combination of letters and pronunciation is a very plausible alternative surname similar to both WAYE and WAGE.
Anne Waye had 3 husbands: Bryan Young, John Peyton and Thomas Harrison
She passed away in 1750.

  • source was "The Peytons of Virginia", 1976, p. 148. It does state that Anne/Ann Waye was the widow of Bryan Young. According to the book, there is no question that John Peyton's first marriage to her was at a date preceding 1727, the approximate date of their first born child. As you may know, John Peyton and his two wives, Ann (Waye) Young Peyton and Elizabeth (Rowzee) Waller Peyton have been reburied in 1936 in the Aquia Churchyard. I see nothing in the book on Anne's origins, parents, sibling, etc.

In the middle of the 18th Century, John Peyton (1691-1760) lived a comfortable plantation life at “Stony Hill” in Stafford County. He was one of the leaders of his county, representing it in the House of Burgesses. He was also a Justice and a Vestryman of Overwharton Parish. As a young man he had been one of Governor Spotswood’s intrepid knights of the Golden Horseshoe. It was Peyton's grand-uncle and grandfather who obtained more than 1,000 acres in an enormous land grant in 1654 and 1657. This Peyton land grant included land that is now part of Wayside Farm, Stony Hill, Aquia Harbor, and the Aquia Church Lot. John was one of the re-builders of Aquia Church, and his name appears on the plaque in that church naming Vestrymen of the re-building year, 1757. In the private family cemetery on the plantation, John Peyton was buried and on either side of him were his two wives, Anne (Waye) Young and Elizabeth (Rowzee) Waller. His sons, John Rowzee Peyton (1754-1798) and Yelverton Peyton (1735-1795) succeeded him at “Stony Hill”, but in time their children scattered to other parts of Virginia and the property passed out of the family.

  • The graves of Vestryman John Peyton, Anne Waye Peyton, Elizabeth Rowzee Peyton, and Eliza Peyton were all moved from "Stony Hill", the Peyton home, to Aquia Church Cemetery around 1936. https://aquiachurch.org/about/cemetery/

Waye-3 and Waye-164 appear to represent the same person because: They married John Peyton who died and was buried at Aquia Church in 1760. She died in 1750 and is buried with John at Aquia Church which I visited. The dates of birth conflict, but the date remains uncertain in this geneology. The Peyton Society of Virginia, of which I am a member lists this Anne Waye as my ancestor who married John Peyton and share the same grave.
