Biography

Jennie was born in Nova Scotia, Canada^[1], as were both of her parents, David & Harriet. ^{[2][3] [4]}According to the 1900 Census, she was born in January of 1856. ^[2]

She immigrated to the United States in 1866. ^[2]

The 1870 US Census has Jennie listed as a house servant for the Lavender family in Chelsea, Suffolk, Massachusetts. ^[1]

By 1900, Jennie was living in Provincetown, Barnstable, Massachusetts with her son-in-law James Smith and daughter Hattie, as well as their daughter Alyce and James' brother Henry. ^[2] The census states she married in 1874 and had been married for 26 years. ^[2]

1920 finds Jennie widowed and still living with James and Hattie, though they were now in Wellfleet, Barnstable, Massachusetts. 5 of her grandchildren also lived in the home. ^[3]

By 1930, Jennie was living with a different child, this time daughter Grace and son-in-law John Howes, and two of their children, Paul and James. ^[4]

Jennie died on 6 February 1931 in Bedford, Massachusetts. ^[5] She is buried at Central Cemetery in Beverly, Essex, Massachusetts. ^[6]

Research Notes

According to Grace's marriage certificate, her name was Sophia J. Weaver.^[7] According to ruthannkulesza on Ancestry, it was Jennie S. There is also a difference in birth dates that still needs to be resolved. We have 1852 for some reason here. Ruth Ann has January 1855, born in Nova Scotia.
