Eliza West was born 27 December 1813[1] in the Cherokee Nation, the daughter of Sarah Harlan, a Cherokee grandddaughter of Nan-ye-hi/Nancy Ward, and Jacob West, a white man. She married Charles Vann about 1833. They had no children. The family was Removed to Indian Territory and settled in the Saline District with other members of her family. Eliza married second a white man, Leroy Markham, in May, 1841. They were the parents of five children, Jacob "Peter", Carter, James, John, and Ruth. [2] Eliza died 6 November 1861 [3] at Saline District and is buried in the Markham Cemetery, Locust Grove (now Mayes County, Oklahoma). [4]
