John, born in New York, was the son of United Empire Loyalists Anthony Westbrook and Sara Decker. The family settled in the Cainsville area of Brant County, Upper Canada.[1][2]
During the War of 1812, Captain John Westbrook served in the 5th Lincoln Militia. He served November 25 to December 25, 1813. [3]
He served June 20 to July 24, 1814 under Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Bradt at the Battle of Lundy’s Lane. [4]
On January 20, 1816, he made a war claim as a yeoman of Grand River for losses to the Indians in October and November, 1814. He lost two skips of bees, eleven hogs, eight sheep, and four tons of hay. Anthony and Andrew Westbrook of Grand River certified the claim. On January 8, 1824, John resubmitted his claim. Andrew Westbrook of Grand River recertified the claim. [6]
He attained the rank of major before his death in 1845. He is buried in the Westbrook Cemetery in Cainsville, Ontario.[7]
