Rachel was born in 1830 in Warren County, Ohio, the daughter of James Whitacre and Elizabeth Fitz Randolph. In 1848 at the age of 18, she married Andrew Cadwaller Davis in Warren County. Her family moved to Wabash township in Darke County in Ohio, and Rachel and Andrew also initially settled to farm there. By 1860, they had moved to farm in nearby Jackson township in the same county. They had eight children together. Between 1860 and 1870, the family moved farther west to the Grovertown area in Starke County, Indiana where Andrew worked as a saloonkeeper. Andrew died in 1874. Rachel never remarried and continued to live in the same area with her children or on her own. She died in Polk in Marshall County, Indiana in 1904 at the age of 74. She is buried with her husband in Grovertown Cemetery in Grovertown, Indiana.
