Joseph was born on 10 March 1855 in New Hope, Madison, Alabama, USA. He was the son of James Madison Whitaker and Nancy (Henry) Bryant.[1]

Joseph died at the age of 76 on 1 August 1931 in Cookeville, Putnam, Tennessee, USA and was buried in Bangham, Putnam County, Tennessee, USA.[1]
