Research Notes

The parents of this Joshua is an ongoing discussion. Many researchers believe that his parents were William Whitaker Jr (1732-abt.1802) and Abrilla (Baker) Whitaker (aft.1739-aft.1802). But the role of their son Joshua seems better filled by Joshua Whitaker (1783-1863), who died in Indiana and is buried in the same graveyard as their daughter Elizabeth (Whitaker) Collett (1773-1856).

The Whitakers of Georgia, who are descended from William Whitaker (abt.1701-aft.1760) and Elizabeth (Carleton) Whitaker (1701-aft.1760), and who emerged in Georgia after the Revolutionary War, are only now beginning to be identified. Who they were, how they are related to each other and the relatives who remained in North Carolina, along with who it was who brought the lineage to this state is not completely understood.

It is believed that this Joshua is a Grandson or Great Grandson of William Whitaker (abt.1701-aft.1760) through one of his sons, either Samuel Whitaker (1731-) or Marcus Whitaker (abt.1726-aft.1787). Marcus seems the more probable. Unfortunately, even thought there is much we can say about Marcus while we was living in North Carolina, we know little of his life in the years beginning in the 1770's until his death in the late 1780's or 1790's, and nothing about his family. Samuel Whitaker is even more of a mystery.

Whitaker-6717 and Whitaker-221 appear to represent the same person because: These two profiles are pointing to the same man. When merged, the father or mother should either be Samuel and Tabitha, or unknown, to be later attached. It should not be William and Abigale.

In all likely hood, this man is not the son of William Mark Whitaker Jr (1732-abt.1802) and Abrilla (Baker) Whitaker (aft.1739-aft.1802). As far as I can see, this relationship is being confounded with Joshua Whitaker (1783-1863). Joshua Whitaker (1783-1863) simple looks to be a better fit as a member of William Jr's family mainly because he moved with his oldest full-blooded sister Elizabeth (Whitaker) Collett (1773-1856) to KY and then on to IN later in life, where both he and she were buried in the same cemetery after their death.

This Joshua Whitaker is very likely be a grandson of either Samuel Whitaker (1731-), or more likely Marcus Whitaker (abt.1726-aft.1787). Exactly who his father is is not known, but the two possibilities so far are Samuel Whitaker (bef.1753-abt.1802) and Mary (Graves) Whitaker (abt.1764-abt.1809). or Joshua Whitaker, (btw 1761-1770 - 1825), who has not yet been added to Wikitree. Also, having these two men (Samuel and Joshua (1783)) as children to Samuel Whitaker (1731-), or more likely Marcus Whitaker (abt.1726-aft.1787) is a relatively undocumented idea.
