Biography

Robert Whitcomb was born in England, the son of John Whitcomb and Frances Coggan. He was baptized at St. James, Taunton, Somerset, England, on 20 Dec 1629.[1][2]

Robert Whitcomb married Mary Cudworth twice. First, they were married in a Quaker ceremony. Torrey shows that they were married at Quebec in 1659.,[3] and from later documents, it appears that they eloped. Charges were brought against Robert and Mary for an improper marriage:

"Att this Court, Robert Whetcomb and Mary Cudworth, for disorderly coming together without consent of parents and lawfull marriage, is sentenced to pay ten pounds fine and imprisoned during the pleasure of the Court; and being desirouse to bee orderly married, accordingly were this 9th of March, 1660."[4]

The marriage of Robert Whitcomb and Mary Cudworth by a Puritan preacher was 9 March 1660 recorded at Littleton, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[5]

In his Will, Gen. James Cudworth, the father of Robert's wife Mary, left legacies to "grandchildren Israel, Robert, Mary and James Whitcombe. There was another daughter, born probably after Gen Cudworth's decease, viz. Elizabeth, wife of Daniel Lincoln of Hingham 1710."[6] (Researcher's Note and Observation: On 24 April 1721 in Scituate, an indenture to partition land between Peter Collamer and Thomas Soper and his wife Mary mentions Elizabeth Whitcomb, late of Scituate, now Elizabeth Lincoln of Hingham, who was the daughter of Isaac Buck,[7] who had married Robert Whitcomb Jr. In my opinion, Elizabeth Whitcomb, daughter of Robert Sr. and Mary Cudworth probably died young as she is not mentioned in her grandfather's will or in her father's probate records with her siblings.)

Based on Gen. Cudworth's Will and Deane's list, Robert and Mary had at least the following children born in Scituate.History of the Town of Hingham, Massachusetts (The Town of Hingham, Massachusetts, 1893): Vol III, p.285

Probate

The estate of Robert Whitcomb was entered into probate in Plymouth Colony. The Inventory of his estate was taken on 18 Jan 1696/7 and recorded in Court on 12 Feb 1696/7. Widow Mary and Israel Whitcomb were appointed administrators. [8] The Inventory mentions what appear to be some loans to or from James, Israel and Robert Whitcomb.[9][10]

1. Included in the estate papers for the Robert Whitcomb who died in 1704, Robert Sr.'s son, is an undated accounting, [11] which shows that his estate was disposed of to the widow and children, specifically mentioning:[12][13]

2. As another accounting in that estate file shows that Robert Jr.'s widow was Elizabeth and that his estate was divided between his widow and their three daughters.[14]

As noted, Mary Cudworth died before her father made his will in 1682. However, Robert's widow, Mary, was an administrator of his estate. This seems to suggest that Robert had a wife after Mary Cudworth, also named Mary.

A March 1660 marriage in Littleton, Mass. seems unlikely since it didn't exist until 1715 and wasn't even settled by any English until 1686.

I agree. Many events that appear in the Littleton vital records were recorded long after the fact and did not occur there.

I am a descendant of Elizabeth, who has been claimed by many as the d/o Robert Whitcomb Sr. However, in a detailed analysis I believe she was instead Elizabeth Buck, widow of Robert Whitcomb Jr. After the latter's death she subsequently married a Lincoln. James Cudworth does not list her in his will in 1681, and it appears his daughter Mary had died by then, leaving Israel as the last one b. 1670, a decade before he wrote his will. Samuel Deane's Scituate book, 1831, is in error I believe in listing Elizabeth as born after Gen. Cudworth's will. This would be over a decade from Israel's birth without any children, which is not believable. E (Buck) W's 2nd husband Daniel was also previously married, and close in age to her. Also she was not listed in the probate of Robert Sr.

I have added more probate info for Robert Sr. and Robert Jr. In the probate file for Robert Jr. there is an accounting which belongs in the file for Robert Sr. It refers to Robert Sr.'s children and legatees and includes Joseph Parker and his wife Mary. Not sure if this clears up anything.

I'm wondering then if the merge of profiles for his sister shouldn't have happened either. One of her death dates was 1695. When I saw 1695 for one of the Roberts, I looked for a 1695 will for one of the parents but the dates weren't right.

Were both the probates in Massachusetts? Mary Moore, daughter of Mary Whitcomb (maybe) & John Moore/More was born in Virginia. I have a note on the daughter's profile that Mary Whitcomb is probably not her mother because Mary Moore's profile shows her as born in Virginia, and Mary Whitcomb's profile has birth and death in Massachusetts.

Whitcomb-5 and Whitcomb-1071 appear to represent the same person because: These are the same men, but the 1704 death date is for Robert's son, Robert. This can be seen in the probate files. Robert Sr.'s administrators were widow Mary and Israel (son). The son's widow was Elizabeth.

Please merge, with date date of 1695, although this may be a year early. I'm still working on that. Thanks, Vic

Whitcomb-1071 and Whitcomb-5 are not ready to be merged because: I believe these are two different men but that birth date and parents for one is incorrect. There were two men named Robert Witcomb: one died in 1697 and the other in 1704, as shown by the probate records. I am researching to solve the puzzle. In the meantime, I have set this Merge Request as Unmatched.
