Biography

Chip White is a retired software engineer who enjoys ancestry research. In some ways WikiTree is a lot like writing software: Research, Code, Test & Fix Bugs and try not to break anything. I was originally drawn to WikiTree because I've always thought that everyone should have their own Wikipedia page.

Now that I've been a member for a while, I have found that I am drawn to many of the stories of the individuals whose profiles I research, regardless of whether they are my direct ancestors or not. Ferreting out the details of their lives and discovering new and interesting facts can be a reward unto itself. And it's all free!

Welcome to Team Massachusetts. For any -Thon, we strive to connect, clean, source, and generally improve profiles from Massachusetts. That doesn’t mean profiles from other places are excluded. Our primary goal is to improve any WT profile. Let’s have some fun this weekend adding lots of sources.

Hi Chip, was doing some research on my family lines and came across your Col. Jonathan Tyng who married my distant cousin, Sarah (Gibbons) Richards Davie Tyng on the 30 May 1706 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts by Mr. Samuel Willard. The gravestone that you have given to (Sarah Usher) Tyng, rightfullty belongs to Sarah (Gibbons) Richards Davie Tyng. The marriage record lists my Sarah as Madam Sarah Davie, widow of Sir Humphrey Davie. If you would like any further information I would be glad to be forthcoming! Thank you, Judy K Bowden

Hi Judy,

You may be correct. But while I did take and post the photos of the couple's gravestones, I'm not a manager of their profiles. My research consisted primarily of the information provided by William Cutter in his "Epitaphs, First Burial-Ground" appendix to Woburn Records of Births, Deaths, Marriages, (See epitaph (47), Page 16* - "Sarah (Usher) Tyng, daughter of Hezekiah Usher, a prominent merchant of Boston, and wife of Col. Jonathan Tyng (epitaph 83)."

I would suggest posting your note to the profile of Sarah (Usher) Tyng (1650-1714) and see if the manager, Chris Hoyt, might have additional research.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do. - Chip.

BTW: I did notice that Sarah apparently named one of her children "Hezekiah."

Hey, Chip

I am preparing to merge your Space: Field Genealogy page into Space:Field Genealogy: Being the Record of all the Field Family in America, whose Ancestors were in this Country Prior to 1700 (these two pages are duplicates -- both are about the same source, and the other one is linked on MANY more pages). This note is to warn you that I do not know if the merge will affect the link on this page... (I am editing the links on Open profiles.)

Thanks, Ellen. The link on my page seems OK. Merging probably takes that into account. Let me know if I'll need to do any post-merge cleanup.

Chip: John Johnson family lineage. My 7th great grandfather was Elkanah Johnson (1673-1748). The only source I have seen identifying his parents is on his FAG memorial #22319185. That said, I just have a feeling his parents were probably John of Rehoboth (1650-1702) and Mary Amadowne (1650-1703). So

Johnson-85977 seems to me to be the best fit. I have John listed as being from Gloucester, MA and dying in Westerly, Rhode Island. I am definitely a descendant of the Rhode Island branch of Johnsons who settled in Coventry, Rhode Island. I don't have a clue who John Johnson's parents were but they were NOT Humphrey Johnson! Unfortunately, I have never found any books about Elkanah Johnson's earlier family lineage, Only comments about Elkanah's gravesite and those of his family, and Elkanah's will seem to exist to verify his life.

Chip; I've been reviewing all of the info I have on Jonathon including reading about Samuel Johnson in "The Great Migration:" It lists his (Samuel's) children which does not include a Jonathon. It does include a John. I suspect Samuel is not out Jonathon's father - we need to find one who also lived in Lynn, MA at the correct date.

It seems like every time I manage to enter a couple of new people, I end up with another headache. I'm getting to old for this stuff! We can still go ahead with a merge on Jonathon.

Regarding Jonathon Johnson-85497: FindAGrave has his birth as Lynn; Also, Lynn seems to have been a popular place for Chairmakers; His son Edward and his Grandson Jedidiah are also listed as a U.S. Craftperson Chairmaker.

My only question is who his father is; All the records have him born in Lynn. And all the Trees I've seen has his father as Samuel Johnson and mother Phoebe Burton. The dates work, but Samuel was born in Boston and died in Boston - so how did Jonathon happen to be born in Lynn. I've tried to do some digging today, but haven't found any thing to substantiate his parentage.

Re: Converse-339

I may have the wrong attribution here but is not King William's War still an applicable category for this profile? I believe King William's War is still an active category. Thanks. D. Jenkins

Thanks for the Chloe catch. I am not sure how I tagged her there- I was moving William Ballard from Erastus to James and that is where I probably kept her as the mother- Thanks Again.
