This has been augmented this year by an appropriation of $100,000 by congress, which will be used to strengthen the tribal schools, establish new schools and provide for attendance of white children at the tribal schools. In all the towns there are public schools, maintained by taxation, Each town directs its own school system and pays the expenses. It is estimated that there are 100,000 school children in the Territory."
Anecdote
Note: According to a story passed down to Sadie Terry, "When he (John R. Whited) was a baby the Northern soldiers tried to make his mom (Evelyn T. Whited) tell where his father (Edward W. Whited) was. They slung him around by his heels and were about to bash his head against a tree. Still she wouldn't tell where he was; that she didn't know. I understand he was in hiding, but not sure."
E.W. Whited and wife, E.T. Whited sold one and three quarters acres to B.P. Sinclair for $275.
