The Kelly's were among the original settlers of Clinton County Indiana. They were of Irish and German extraction. However, there was a very strong family legend that one of them had an Indian wife named Moonflower. I have found no record of this. My Mother said there was a strong enough belief in this that the family attempted to get money when the Indian claims were settled. We have Kelly cousins remaining in Clinton County, and my Mother's first cousin Clarence and family live in or near Lancaster, California. There is a cemetery on the back of the old home place near Michigantown where some of our ancestors are buried.
Researchers Note:
The belief of Native American heritage could be based on long time speculation that John Whiteman father of Nancy Whiteman Kelly was of Native American descent. Family historians are still debating this as of 2004.
The cemetery where many of the Michigantown Kelly's are buried is Brandon Cemetery located in a farmers field at latitude 40.329N longitude -86.427W.
