FOUND DROWNED IN RUSHCUTTERS BAY

Yesterday afternoon a man named Alfred Fare, employed on the yacht Isaiah, in Rushcutters Bay, found the dead body of an unknown man floating in the water of the bay. The body was taken first to Vipond's Boatshed, and then to the North City Morgue. It is that of a man of from 45 to 70 years of age, 5ft. 9in. high, with grizzled hair, full beard and moustache. A calico band tied across his back and attached to both wrists seems to indicate a determined suicide. A soft felt hat, a walking stick, and a pair of lace-up shoes were found on the bank. The clothes worn by the deceased were grey tweed trousers, with blue striped braces attached, a striped woollen shirt, white flannel undershirt, and brown merino socks. A purse containing 1shilling and 1 and 1/2 d was found in one of the pockets of the trousers.

SUICIDE IN RUSHCUTTERS BAY

On Wednesday last an old man named William Whitfield, 85, was convicted at the Water Police Court of attempted suicide. He stated then that he was tired of life, and had made a wound in his leg that he might bleed to death. The magistrate ordered him to be shut up in the cells for an hour, and in due course he was discharged. A body was discovered in Rushcutter Bay on Monday afternoon, and it was yesterday identified as that of Whitfield. The fact that his hands were tied behind his back, with a piece of calico, went to show that he was determined to end the life of which he had become so tired. The circumstances surrounding his death were yesterday the subject of an inquest at the Lloyd Hotel, George and Argyle Streets by the City Coroner (Mr J.C Woore, JP) and a verdict of suicide was the result of the jury's deliberation.
