Biography

Janette, the daughter of Ervin Whitlock and Mary Abney, was born 25 October 1854 probably in Macoupin or Adams County, Illinois.[1] She died on 5 March 1899 in Duluth, Minnesota.[2]

She was listed as a member of Ervin Whitlock's household on the in 1860 Census in LaGrange Township, Lewis County, Missouri. Janetta, age 6, born in Missouri

She probably was Jane H. Whitlock, age 17, who lived in Ervin Whitlock's household in Albion Township, Wright County, Minnesota, when the 1870 U. S. census was taken. She was reported to have been born in Iowa.

She was not yet sixteen years old when the married Charles Dygart. Their first, and probably only child, died at the age of two months and ten days on December 15 or 18, 1871. At first, authorities were suspicious about the cause of his death and attributed it to "poisoning." A couple weeks later, the death was re-recorded with the cause of death a nearly illegible word that looked like "Panacea."

The baby's death certainly caused great distress. Did it lead to marital problems? At any rate, Nettie left her husband within the year. When Charles Dygert filed for divorce, he claimed that Nettie deserted him on November 1, 1872.

In 1875, Nettie "Daggett," age 19, was living in Corinna Township with Edward and Clara Philo, her brother-in-law and sister.[3] Her name was indexed as "Nittie Daggett.")

How she met Henry Champlin of Mankato is unknown, but on their marriage record, he was said to be a trader of Mankato, Minnisota. They were married 18 November 1876 in Prescott, Pierce County, Wisconsin.[4] Nettie's parents were listed on the marriage license: Ervine Whitlock and Mary Whitlock.

After their marriage, Henry and Nettie Champlin lived in St. Paul, Minnesota, where they kept a boarding house. At this point they did not have children. In 1880, the only other members of the household were two servants and several boarders.

They were still in St. Paul when the 1885 state census was taken. Henry was age 39, born in New York; and Nettie was age 30 reported as born in Minnesota. Their son, Harry was age 4, born in Minnesota.[5]

Charles Dygart filed for divorce in Wright County, Minnesota. On June 8, 1887, a summons was issued to Nettie Dygart of St. Paul. The grounds for the divorce was desertion.[6] He may not have known that Nettie had already remarried. Whether or not she filed for divorce before her second marriage, has not been determined. Charles Dygart was remarried later in 1887. He remained in Wright County until his death.

Probably about 1887, Henry and Nettie moved to Duluth, Minnesota. The 1895 Minnesota state census reveals a household in Duluth consisting of Henry, a Postal clerk, age 50, born in NY; Nettie 40, born in MN; Harry, 14; George, 9; Gertrude, 5; and Beatrice, 3, all born in Minnesota. On this census, males over age 25 were asked how long they resided in the state. Henry was a resident of Minnesota for 25 years

Nettie died on 5 Mar 1899 in Duluth, St. Louis County, Minnesota, at age 44. The St. Louis County indexed her name as Nettie Champlin but, unfortunately, the Duluth News-Tribune has it wrong.

"Mrs. Phamplin Dead
The death of Mrs. Nettie Phamplin, wife of Henry Phamplin, ___ Grand avenue east, occurred yesterday of cancer. The date of the funeral will be fixed later. Mrs. Phamplin leaves a husband and two little daughters." (Death notice, Duluth News-Tribune, March 6, 1899, p. 5)
