Hubert Joseph Whitman was born 29 Sep 1834 in Mayville, Chautauqua, New York. He was the son of Charles Spencer Whitman and Mary Ann Jakeway.

22 Dec 1857 Hubert Joseph Whitman married Susan Cappers in Boone County, Illinois. [1] [2]

1860 U.S. Census Hubert Whitman (age 26, misspelled Wheatman) and his wife Susan are living in Darlington, Lafayette, Wisconsin with their daughter: Fanny (age 1). Hubert was born in New York; Susan was born in Maine; Fanny was born in Wisconsin. Real estate value: $1168; Personal estate: $185. ubert is a farmer. [3] 1870 son George passed away at age 5 from consumption on 6 May 1870. [4]

1870 U.S. Census Hubert Whitman (age 36, misspelled Hulburt) and his wife Susan are living in Darlington, Lafayette, Wisconsin with their children: Fanny (age 11), Mattie (age 7), and Charles (age 1). Value of real estate: $2500. Value of personal property: $1500. Hubert and Susan were born in New York. The children were all born in Wisconsin. Hubert was a Coal Merchant; Susan is keeping house. From 1875 to 1890 Hubert was proprietor of the well known Whitman Hotel in Darlington. Wisconsin. [6]

The family consisted of four sons, all of whom died in childhood and two daughters, Miss Fanny of Darlington and Mrs. Henry Hocking of Benton.

History of Lafayette County H.J. Whitman, proprietor Whitman House, Darlington; is a native of Chautauqua Co., N.Y., and was born Sept. 30. 1834; his parents came West to Illinois in 1836, and settled in Belvidere, Boone Co., and he grew up to manhood there; he came to Lafayette Co. in 1857, and engaged in railroading, and afterward engaged for some years in farming; in 1875, he engaged in the hotel business; the Whitman House, of which he is proprietor, is one of the best hotels in this section of the State, and is justly popular with the traveling community; he has held various town offices. In Dec. 1858, Mr. Whitman was united in marriage to Miss Susan Capers, from Belvidere, Ill.; they have had five children, two of whom survive- Fannie and Mattie. _____________________________________________________________________

Find a Grave OBITUARY: Died, at his home in this city on Thursday, Oct. 24th, 1889. Mr. H.J. Whitman, aged 55 years. Deceased was borne in Mayville, N.Y. in 1834. When about two years old he came west with his parents, who settled in Illinois. From Illinois he came to this county, of which he has been a resident for thirty five years. He was one of a family of nine children, five of whom survive him, E.J. Whitman, Wiota, G.J. Whitman and Mrs. Eliza Brown, Belvidere, Ill., and Mrs. Mordoff, Genoa, Ill. His mother died when he was small, and his aged father in December of last year. He was the father of five children, but two of whom survive him, Miss Fannie Whitman and Mrs. Henry Hocking of this city. Mr. Whitman has been an invalid for a number of years, and although rallying at times, grew gradually though slowly weaker and weaker to the end. In his death this community loses a worthy and respected citizen and his family an affectionate husband and father. His funeral took place on Sunday and his remains were followed to their last resting place in the Union Grove cemetery. Darlington Democrat 1 Nov 1889
