Biography

John Whitney was born 27 November 1716 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts to Nathaniel Whitney and Sarah Ford Whitney.

He married three times - and had children by all his wives:

  • First, in September 1739, in Eastham, Massachusetts to Jerusha Knowles, daughter of Samuel and Bethia Brown Knowles.
  • Second, about 1744-1745 in Nantucket, Massachusetts to Mrs. Margaret Coffin Gardner, daughter of Josiah and Elizabeth (Coffin) Coffin and widow of Shubael Gardner. John and Margaret had children Mary, Sarah, Margaret and John Coffin Whitney, the last two certainly born in York, Maine.
  • Third, about 1753, in York, Maine to Mrs. Hepzibah Adams (formerly Adams), daughter of Hezekiah and Mary (Weare) Adams and widow of Richard Adams.

John Whitney was a physician. In many of the deeds he executed in Maine, he described himself as a physician as he did in this 1759 conveyance that secured Hepzibah's inheritances: " John Whitney of York, York Co., Province of Massachusetts Bay, physician, sends greetings.."

Dr. John Whitney died sometime between January 1774 - when he sealed a deed - and October 1775 when the widow Hepzibah Whitney sealed a deed regarding her dower rights.

According to Whitney-402, Nathaniel was born in York, Maine and lived his whole life in Maine. So how could he have a son, John Whitney, who was born in Massachusetts??? Either Whitney-402 is incorrect or Whitney 3541 is incorrect. Also, why does Whitney-402 have three sons named John??? Why is John Whitney the only child of Nathaniel NOT born in Maine??? I realize the "Vital Records of Sherborn, Mass" lists Nathaniel and Sarah as John's parents, but there is no evidence that Nathaniel and Sarah (Ford) Whitney ever lived in Sherborn, Mass. Nathaniel was conducting business in York, Maine during 1715, 1717, & 1719. John was born in Nov 1716. It looks like Dr. John moved from Massachusetts to Maine by 1749, according to "Vital Records of York, Maine, prior to 1892."

Whitney-4459 and Whitney-3541 appear to represent the same person because: Let's merge! Many thanks, Ann
